COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Hub City Brewing hosted a benefit show Friday evening that featured music from Penelope Road and Kota to support tornado victims in McNairy County — leaders said 50% of ticket sales were donated to aid those in need. WYN 106.9
- ➤ Storms wrecked Selmer earlier this week—local churches, Freed-Hardeman volunteers and community groups mobilized to clear debris and distribute food boxes and essential supplies. The Community Foundation of West Tennessee reactivated its Disaster Relief fund and received over $3,500 in donations while Jackson’s Harley Davidson dealership asked for nonclothing items like water, nonperishable food and hygiene supplies. - ➤ Devastating storms left communities across West Tennessee without needed supplies, and several local organizations are now providing aid and accepting donations at centers in Selmer, Jackson, Bolivar and Dyer. Donation drop-offs varied by location—one began on April 4 and others will occur on April 6 and April 7—to help reach victims with essential resources. WBBJ-TV
- ➤ Jackson Police Officer Daniel Vandiver lost all his belongings when a severe storm hit Selmer on Wednesday—he was named Officer of the Year in 2024 and the department set up a fund at Cadence Bank to help his family while asking for thoughts and prayers. WNBJ 39
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Loren Stanford has been named Educator of the Week by the Tennessee Education Lottery. She teaches 7th and 8th grade math and science at Bargerton Elementary School—she said she loves watching her students have 'aha' moments and now is eligible for the Educator of the Month award. WYN 106.9
- ➤ Severe storms hit Union University on Thursday, collapsing part of the Penick Academic Complex — a 3,200-square-foot section used for art, languages, and social work classes. Classes in the affected areas were moved while officials plan to demolish 7,500 square feet and complete repairs by fall. WYN 106.9
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Multiple agencies in West Tennessee announced road closures due to flooding on April 3, affecting roads in Jackson and several counties—Carroll, Crockett, Madison, Haywood and Obion counties—. Officials say the closures are temporary—drivers are advised to avoid flooded routes—and updates will follow. WYN 106.9
- ➤ Due to heavy rainfall, many West Tennessee roads are flooded and some, such as Chestnut Bluff Road in Crockett County and East Road in Friendship, are completely underwater (county officials advise drivers to avoid flooded roads as additional rain is expected tonight and tomorrow). WBBJ-TV

- ➤ The Jackson Police Department thanked the public on Facebook and set up a relief fund for Officer Daniel Vandiver, who lost his home in a tornado in McNairy County Wednesday night — donations made through Cadence Bank will help his family recover. WBBJ-TV
