  • Fireworks vendors in Jackson reported strong sales during the first New Year’s Eve celebration with fireworks legalized. Several stands, including one at north Jackson Walmart, stayed open until late as fireworks were allowed until 12:30 a.m. — vendors offered special deals for the holiday.  WBBJ-TV
  • Residents can join the free First Day Hike today at 10 a.m. along the Club Lake Trail at Natchez Trace State Park and Pinson Mounds to start the new year with health and community spirit.  WNBJ 39

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • New data revealed that Tennessee ranked 10th among the most dangerous states to drive on New Year's, with Davidson (3rd) and Shelby (8th) counties among the riskiest, while drivers who hit the road between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. faced significantly higher risks.  WYN 106.9

  • Today, most banks, federal offices, and USPS post offices in Jackson are closed because it is a federal holiday, while key retailers like Walmart and Target are open with regular hours and grocery stores offer modified schedules.  The Jackson Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Kerri Anne Breeden was named the new chief of staff for Jackson-Madison County Schools and begins her role today. She brings over twenty years of education experience — having served as principal and federal programs director — and will work with Superintendent Dr. Marlon King to boost student success.  WBBJ-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Chipping of the Greens returned Wednesday at 8 a.m. for tree recycling, with drop-offs at North Park, Liberty Garden, Malesus Park and the Fire Training Center — mulched trees will be available for pickup on Jan. 17 from 8 a.m. to noon.  WYN 106.9
  • Jackson residents can recycle their Christmas trees for free at select drop-off sites via the Chipping of the Greens initiative until January 8 at 4 p.m. The trees will be chipped into mulch available for pickup on January 17 starting at 8 a.m. (supplies limited).  WNBJ 39
