ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Jackson home fire at 441 North Hays Avenue on Jan. 2 at 5:19 p.m. saw a trapped occupant rescued through quick 911 dispatch and aggressive fire tactics, and while the victim is awake his father recovers in hospital.  WBBJ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday morning, JMCSS held a convocation at Oman Arena where 2,000 employees gathered to mark the start of the school year + local officials attended the event. Teachers left by about 10:30 a.m. while students return on Tuesday.  WBBJ-TV

FINANCE NEWS

  • The Greater Jackson Financial Empowerment Center and the Dyersburg American Job Center will offer a free workshop, 'Mastering Your Money,' on Jan. 27 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the American Job Center-Dyersburg (313 West Cedar St.) to help residents learn budgeting, goal-setting, and debt management.  WYN 106.9
  • The Better Business Bureau warns local residents that tax season brings an increase in unqualified preparer services and advises verifying credentials + watching for red flags like cash-only fees before choosing help. Remember, you are ultimately responsible for your tax return.  WYN 106.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Jackson Fire Department launched Project (ESCAPE) to boost first response times for structure fires, reducing evacuation from 17 minutes to about 3–4 minutes. The new program emphasizes that every second counts and recently helped rescue a man during a north Hays Avenue fire.  WYN 106.9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Elizabeth Vickery from the Kirkland Cancer Center appeared on the midday show to share details about an upcoming cervical cancer screening — the event will offer early detection guidance.  WYN 106.9
  • Firefighters at Station One responded on Monday, Jan. 5 when a healthy infant was safely surrendered via a Safe Haven Baby Box over the weekend and quickly cared for the child + transported the infant for a medical check. Officials confirmed the infant is in good health.  WNBJ 39
  • The Madison County Health Department reported rising flu cases in Tennessee, and officials advise residents to wash hands frequently + cover coughs and sneezes, and get a flu shot to protect themselves amid increasing nationwide activity.  WNBJ 39

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Tennessee kicker Max Gilbert signed with Arkansas on Jan. 5 and will face his old team on Oct. 10 — Arkansas replaced Scott Starzyk as the starting kicker, setting up an unusual matchup.  The Jackson Sun
  • Lane College won a home game against Albany State eight minutes ago + the win boosted the team’s momentum for upcoming contests.  WYN 106.9
