COMMUNITY NEWS

  • AARP Jackson hosted a 'Coats of Kindness' coat drive at its Wednesday meeting (its first drive of the year) and asked members to donate gently worn coats for local seniors who benefit from extra warmth during outings. The donated coats were delivered to Cades Center assisted living.  WBBJ TV
  • Black Tie and Boxing 2026 raised over $245,000 for The STAR Center on Jan. 10 in Jackson; the event mixed glamour with amateur boxing to support care for people with disabilities. Leaders Credit Union sponsored the night + local fighters raised extra funds through their Fight Club efforts.  The Jackson Sun

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tesla now offers a contactless test drive. Local drivers can schedule a drive on the Tesla app or website (uploading a photo of their license) to unlock a car with their phone and then must spend 25 minutes at a super charger after driving.  WBBJ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Jackson Museum School (Jackson’s first-ever charter school) is accepting applications for the 2026-27 school year. Enrollment begins this November as the school prepares to open in fall.  WNBJ 39

FINANCE NEWS

  • The Better Business Bureau warns local taxpayers to verify tax preparers’ credentials to prevent costly IRS audits and repayments. BBB President and CEO Randy Hutchinson advises checking for a valid PTIN (tax identifier) on BBB’s accredited list before making cash payments.  The Jackson Sun

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Jackson Transit Authority announced it will not run regular bus service on MLK Day, Monday, Jan. 19, and buses will resume Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 6:00 a.m.—regular hours are 6:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday.  WBBJ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northside Animal Hospital experts advise pet owners today to prepare for winter by cleaning pets' paws, providing boot protection, and ensuring fresh food and water to prevent hypothermia. They recommend a well-insulated, wind-protected shelter (like a doghouse) as a safe haven when pets are outdoors.  WNBJ 39

SPORTS NEWS

  • Earlier today, Jackson State hosted a media day for its softball and baseball teams. Softball enters the season after a strong campaign with a .500 Conference record while baseball starts 16-39 and adds key transfers to boost its roster.  WBBJ-TV
