  • Youth Villages is hosting a free screening of 'Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot' Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. at New Greater Bethel AME Church (148 Cartmell St.) in Jackson to raise awareness of the need for more foster parents.  WBBJ-TV
  • Groovy Roots Plant and Garden Shop — located at 114 East Lafayette Street — hosts an indoor farmers market featuring organic houseplants and will offer a seed-starting class on Jan. 31 to help locals start their gardens early.  WBBJ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Code Red Ministerial Coalition invites residents to Unity Temple Church of God at 369 Lexington Avenue for an event honoring Martin Luther King Jr. set for Sunday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. — organizers say all are welcome regardless of background.  WBBJ-TV
  • Gov. Bill Lee signed a proclamation Friday naming Jan. 19 Dolly Parton Day to honor her 80th birthday and legacy. The Grand Ole Opry holds a show today (Parton said she will send her love despite not attending).  WBBJ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local leaders gathered Friday morning at the entrance of Jackson-Central Merry to meet students as part of the ongoing Men on the Move Tour and pledged to return to support mentoring efforts across schools.  WBBJ TV
  • Lane College responded Friday to increased concerns from students and parents over unsanitary dorm conditions—including mold, pests, and shortages of cleaning supplies—in on-campus housing. Some students reported having to clean communal areas themselves while officials reviewed the situation.  WBBJ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new report reveals restaurant inspection scores in West Tennessee from January 9 to 15. In Jackson, spots like Sonic, American Wings, and Subway scored between 80 and 100, highlighting ongoing food safety checks in our community.  WBBJ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • In a Friday night hoops game, the South Side pickup team won over North Side on their home court. The match highlighted local sports talent and energized the community.  WYN 106.9
