- ➤ Jackson’s reimagined Crystal Ball event takes place Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Carl Perkins Civic Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring red-carpet arrivals and Old Hollywood flair to benefit The Jackson Symphony’s music education and community programs (tickets and reservations available by calling 731-427-6440). - ➤ The Ned in Jackson will host the UpstARTS! Collegiate Student Art Exhibition from Feb. 2 to 27 in its downstairs gallery where college students' creative work will be showcased. A reception is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 5, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to meet the artists. WNBJ 39
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Jackson schools launched King-Sized Rewards to boost attendance as JMCSS works to cut chronic absenteeism. The district will publish an attendance scoreboard next Wednesday to highlight schools that improve absence rates and earn incentives. WBBJ-TV
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tennessee ranked 5th nationally for frozen pipe and water damage claims costing $31 million from 2024 through June 2025, according to State Farm. Locals are advised to insulate pipes and let faucets drip as winter weather takes hold. WYN 106.9
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ County officials in Jackson plan for weekend snow by salting roads every six hours & deploying crews on 12-hour shifts to focus on hills and overpasses prone to freezing. The city said these measures will help keep roads safer until the storm passes. WNBJ 39
- ➤ Governor Bill Lee issued a State of Emergency for all 95 counties on Jan. 11 in preparation for a winter storm watch from this evening through Sunday, with TDOT crews and emergency teams ready to clear roads + respond to hazards. WBBJ-TV
- ➤ The Tennessee Highway Patrol offered cold weather safety tips as a winter storm is expected later this weekend. Lt. Bill Miller advised residents to dress appropriately and check their vehicles to prevent emergencies. WYN 106.9
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A frigid Arctic air mass is set to lower temperatures across Tennessee into next month, and the American Red Cross advises residents to dress warmly, use battery-powered lights + take extra care on icy roads to avoid frostbite and fire hazards. WBBJ-TV
- ➤ West TN Healthcare announced the passing of former President and CEO Jim Moss on Jan. 22. He led the health system from 1981 to 2008 by expanding services and community care — a legacy that continues to shape local healthcare. WBBJ-TV
- ➤ The Jackson Fire Department has shared tips for safely heating homes this winter. Residents are advised to test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and give space heaters plenty of room (Community Risk Reduction Specialist Melissa Nelson provided the guidance). WNBJ 39
