  • Henry Bussey of The Collective Underground hosted a warming shelter before Winter Storm Fern hit, feeding between 25 and 60 homeless people daily — a rate supported by generous volunteers. He said the experience deepened his empathy for the community.  WNBJ 39
  • The Greater Jackson Chamber hosted its annual awards ceremony honoring local businesses and individuals from 2025, including winners (Mental Health and Developmental Services and Golden Years Adult Day Care); Chamber CEO Kyle Spurgeon urged the community to support all local enterprises as the Chamber plans new projects for 2026.  WBBJ-TV

  • SOUL Collective will host Make it Happen Monday, a networking and goal-setting session for Black entrepreneurs on Monday, Feb. 9 at Jaxon Station - 580 South Royal Street from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Participants must register in advance to secure their spot.  WNBJ 39

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson was nominated for Best City for Street Art in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards because its growing public art movement has transformed local walls and streets into canvases.   • The Ned R. McWherter West Tennessee Cultural Arts Center is hosting a reception today from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 314 East Main Street to present the UpstARTS! Collegiate Student Art Exhibition featuring local college student works, and the exhibit remains open until Feb. 27.  WNBJ 39

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Recent inclement weather forced several middle school basketball games to be forfeited, leaving parents upset over the loss of playoff opportunities and district awards. District officials said school closures help protect students from traffic injuries and dangerous refreezing conditions.  WBBJ-TV

  • Following major tree damage from ice storms, Tennessee Attorney General’s Office advises Jackson consumers to carefully verify tree trimming and removal contractors as Governor Lee suspended licensing until March 7 — homeowners should confirm contractor experience and insurance to avoid scams.  WBBJ-TV
  • The Tennessee Department of Transportation began repairing potholes after winter weather damaged roads; drivers on interstates and state routes may face brief delays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays and weekends (call 833-TDOTFIX to report issues).  WNBJ 39
