COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Retired fire chief Owen Collins was inducted yesterday at the Doubletree Hotel into the Tennessee Fire Service Hall of Fame for his decades of leadership — his career spans firefighter education and public safety. He retired from the Jackson Fire Department in 2001.  WBBJ-TV
  • Hundreds of farmers gathered at the Dyer County fairgrounds this week for the annual West Tennessee Grain and Soybean Producers Conference — a free event hosted by UT Extension that offered updates on crop innovations and pest management strategies.  WBBJ-TV
  • Jackson has launched the Big Tip event to boost local service workers who lost hours after the winter storm. Residents are encouraged to tip generously at restaurants and bars until Feb. 15, promoted via Facebook by Visit Jackson & the Greater Jackson Chamber.  WNBJ 39
  • The City of Jackson thanked local volunteers and donors who supported Emergency Cold Weather Shelters run for ten nights during Winter Storm Fern. The shelters at First United Methodist Church (women and children) and T.R. White Sportsplex (men) provided warmth and essential items to over 60 neighbors.  WBBJ-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Officials responded to a fire at Allied Hose & Belting Co. at 40 N Conalco Dr in northeast Jackson on Feb. 5; residents were advised to avoid the area while emergency crews handled the incident.  WBBJ-TV
  • A hazardous materials emergency occurred on Wednesday evening at 88 Holland Avenue when mixing commercial cleaner and bleach released toxic gases; 12 people including firefighters, EMS, and residents were taken to the hospital, and one patient was pronounced dead.  WBBJ TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The JEWEL Awards banquet will take place on Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carl Perkins Civic Center and will honor 25 years of support for local small and minority-owned businesses — DJVon will entertain as entrepreneurs gather to celebrate the milestone.  WNBJ 39

CRIME NEWS

  • Today, the FTC obtained a temporary restraining order against the Accelerated Debt program after operators misled seniors & veterans by impersonating banks and charging illegal fees that worsened consumer debt.  The Jackson Sun

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson is nominated for USA Today’s Best City Street Art award and residents can vote online until Feb. 16 to help secure the win.  WNBJ 39

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson Energy Authority warned that utility bills will rise as residents used more heat after a recent winter storm. Customers with higher bills are urged to call customer service (731-422-7500) or join the Utility Care program for assistance via Southwest Human Resource Agency.  WNBJ 39
  • TDOT urges residents to report potholes caused by cold weather near Jackson — temporary asphalt fixes are in use and crews will conduct permanent repairs when temperatures warm. Local residents noted several potholes along Highland and Hollywood, prompting calls for lasting road repairs.  WNBJ 39
