CULTURE NEWS

  • St. John #2 Missionary Baptist Church in Denmark held a Black History Month service at 191 Bond Cemetery Road that featured gospel, choir singing, youth dancing, and a live history museum honoring key Black American figures including Billy Harris and Martin Luther King, Jr. Guests joined a fellowship meal afterward.  WBBJ-TV
  • Hub City Theatre Company is presenting its new WWII drama A Thing of Beauty at the chapel at First United Methodist Church in downtown Jackson; performances began on Feb. 20 and will continue until March 1 (tickets cost $20 and are available in person or online).  WBBJ-TV
  • St. Nicholas Orthodox Christian Church held its Forgiveness Sunday service from 1 to 2:30 p.m. (419 Old Humboldt Road) to mark the beginning of Lent as members practiced forgiveness within the community.  WBBJ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield officials say many insured Tennesseans are not using free preventive services like cancer screenings, child wellness visits, and vaccines. They encourage members to use the mobile app & reminders to catch health issues early.  The Jackson Sun

  • Voting is open for the Jackson area high school boys basketball Athlete of the Week for Feb. 16-21 with nominees Kealan Polk from Bolivar Central, Jake Reynoldson from Camden, Kelsey Rose from Jackson Christian and Gabe Lee from Trinity Christian; the poll closes Feb. 26 at 4 p.m.  The Jackson Sun
  • The Tennessee Sports Writers Association and USA TODAY Network released today's TSSAA girls' basketball rankings, showing a first-place tie in Division II-AA and Jackson County posting a 19-9 record in Division I. Polls will update weekly as state tournaments approach.  The Jackson Sun
