Good morning, Jackson. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 31st of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Boys and Girls Club of Jackson replaced its outdoor pavilion on Lexington Avenue after a tornado destroyed it in 2000—donated supplies and volunteer labor helped complete the project, which the Leadership Jackson Class of 2024 celebrated with a ribbon-cutting last week. The restored pavilion will provide a safe space for over 800 youth and will support a seven-week summer program starting June 2.  The Jackson Sun
  • Community members held a Colon Cancer Awareness Walk in Jackson on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at North Park (210 Demonbreun Drive) where they prayed, released balloons, and raised awareness for regular screenings; organizers said they will make this an annual event.  WYN 106.9
  • Gospel Light Baptist Church honored local first responders on Sunday—community members attended a special service and luncheon where they learned about the work of firemen, police, military servicemen and other emergency workers while visiting fire trucks, police vehicles and even a helicopter.  WBBJ TV
  • WRAP's Denim and Pearls event returns to the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson tonight to celebrate its 50th Anniversary with dinner, dancing, and live music from The Purple Madness—a top Prince tribute band. Proceeds will help fund programs for survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault.  WYN 106.9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hub City Theatre Company presented its reinvented version of 'The Comedy of Errors' on Sunday at Rotary Park outside the Jackson-Madison County Library—setting the classic tale in 1920s Appalachia with slapstick moments and mistaken twin identities—with the production set to continue next weekend from April 4 to 6.  WYN 106.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers will vote next week on a bill that would tax vape products up to 10% and ban sales of items not approved by the FDA—aiming to stop Chinese imports that harm children and schools. Sponsor Sen. Ken Yager said the plan will generate revenue for the state's general fund and protect youth from dangerous vaping products.  The Jackson Sun
  • The Tennessee Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that private businesses may fire workers for petitioning the government—referring to a 2021 case when Hamilton County resident Heather Smith lost her job after emailing her state representative about a vaccine rule. The decision shows that only government actions are limited by the First Amendment—leaving private employers free to fire employees under current law.  The Jackson Sun
  • Educators, advocates and legislators met in Jackson for the Southwest Tennessee Legislative Forum where Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth’s executive director Richard Kennedy shared key findings from the State of the Child report, including a decline in child poverty and rising child care costs. The forum highlighted data that will guide legislative efforts to improve the well-being of children and families.  The Jackson Sun
