  • Today, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce awarded the Greater Jackson Chamber a 5-Star Accreditation—recognizing its strong leadership and positive impact on local businesses. CRIME NEWS

  • The alleged suspect, Matthew Berry, in the Picture Perfect Event Center shooting—where an incident on Oct. 20 left one dead and eight injured—appeared in Jackson City Court on Mar. 26 and his case was bound over to a grand jury while he faces charges including First Degree Murder in Perpetration of a Crime, Attempted Second Degree Murder, and Theft of Property between $1,000 and $2,500.  The Jackson Sun

  • Griot Collective will host a poetry workshop on April 3 at Lane College in Jackson starting at 1 p.m. for local college students. Award-winning poet Major Jackson will read his work and host a Q&A session at 6 p.m.—celebrating National Poetry Month.  WNBJ 39

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Tennessee Higher Education Commission declared Finish the FAFSA Week from March 31 through April 4 to urge high school seniors and their families to complete the FAFSA by April 15—ensuring eligibility for two years of tuition-free college through Tennessee Promise.  WNBJ 39

SPORTS NEWS

  • JCM basketball's BJ Ballard won last week's Boys Athlete of the Week by receiving 7,811 votes out of 16,221 and fans will vote once per hour until 5 p.m. on April 3 to pick this week's top local athlete among nominees in baseball and soccer.  The Jackson Sun
  • Jackson area high school softball fans can vote for the girls athlete of the week until 5 p.m. Thursday, April 3. Nominees include Kylie Ballentine of South Gibson, Katelyn Coulston of Haywood, Emerson Fair of USJ, Avery Faulkner of South Fulton, Blakely Harmon of Lexington, Lily Kate Jones of Dyersburg, Rylee Key of Dyer County, Addie Jo Melton of Camden, Madey Putnam of TCA and McCall Sims of Westview—last week’s winner Chanley Steele from McNairy Central earned 8,557 votes.  The Jackson Sun
