COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of West Tennessee held its 13th annual First Ladies' Luncheon to support community programs across 15 counties. The fundraiser introduced a new CEO and featured tablescape displays designed by local women to honor United Way’s legacy.  WBBJ TV
  • The city will host its 12th cleanup day Saturday, April 18 from 8 a.m. to noon at the public works yard on Conalco Drive. Residents may drop off mattresses, furniture and four tires per vehicle with free shredding (hazardous waste is not accepted).  WBBJ TV
  • In March, local patrons rounded up $2,746.88 at McDonald’s to support the new Ronald McDonald House (a 20-room facility at Hyatt Place on the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital campus) for families with sick or injured children. The funds help cover operational costs for the program.  WNBJ 39
  • The 2026 Flint Cox Golf Invitational will be held May 11 at Jackson Country Club, located at 31 Country Club Lane, to raise funds for The STAR Center that provides services for people with disabilities. Golfers and community supporters can sign up as teams to help support these vital services.  WNBJ 39
  • Five teams will spend 24 hours in kennels at Jackson Animal Care and Control this weekend for the Shelter Slumber Pawty event that spotlights animal shelter experiences (donations support medical care and the spay and neuter program).  WNBJ 39
  • Birth Choice held a banquet at Englewood Baptist Church on Thursday to raise funds for its new adoption agency and free clinics for unexpected pregnancies. Keynote speaker Steven Holland shared his adoption story (boosting the event) as director Tiffany Dawson said funds help keep services free.  WBBJ TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jackson-Madison County School System hosted its annual career fair yesterday evening at Oman Arena to recruit for the 2026-2027 school year; it offered positions for teachers + food service workers, maintenance staff, bus drivers, and custodians, according to deputy superintendent Diane Hicks Watkins.  WBBJ TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tennessee Attorney General Skrmetti said a New York jury’s verdict on April 16 could lead to legal steps to break up Live Nation’s monopoly + force lower ticket prices for fans. A bench trial will decide if the company must split its assets, including Ticketmaster.  The Jackson Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Tennessee Senate passed Matthew Davenport's Law (HB1649) on April 16, which would make kratom possession a misdemeanor and its sale felony, sending the bill to Gov. Lee for review. Advocates, including chronic pain patient Jennifer Gillis, say it risks limiting access to a natural remedy.  The Jackson Sun
  • Jackson-Madison County General Hospital held a ceremony Thursday to honor organ donors and recipients. Guests left messages on wooden birds on a memorial tree as part of the hospital's April event encouraging organ donation.  WBBJ-TV
