COMMUNITY NEWS

  • RIFA held a brunch Tuesday, April 22nd to honor volunteers who donated 27,000+ hours in 2024 by providing meals and clothing to those in need. The event highlighted work at soup kitchens, warehouses, and school snack backpack programs while urging more community participation.  WNBJ 39
  • Madelyn Hefner and Betsy Swindell—local community voices—joined WBBJ 7 to share details on Polly's Playground, a therapy garden and greenspace for children visiting the Carl Perkins Center in Jackson.  WYN 106.9
  • Super Bowl champion Trey Smith, a hometown native, visited Jackson on April 22 to promote his second year fighting childhood hunger by partnering with the Southwest Human Resource Agency at the Carl Perkins Civic Center—City of Jackson Mayor Scott Conger and Madison County Mayor A.J. Massey honored him by declaring the day Trey Smith Day. This effort aims to boost community support for programs that serve children during summer breaks.  The Jackson Sun
  • Trey Smith, a Kansas City Chiefs guard and West Tennessee native, visited Jackson today to launch a free summer nutrition program for kids—running from May until August and expecting to serve over 500,000 meals for children ages 1 to 18.  WNBJ 39

CULTURE NEWS

  • Vintage Makers Fest returns on April 26 and 27 at 91 New Market Street in Jackson—this event will feature art, music, and shopping.  WNBJ 39

HEALTH NEWS

  • Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital names Donald J. Bearden as its first chief of Pediatric Psychology and Behavioral Health—he will lead a new division to integrate mental and behavioral care into pediatric treatment while also serving as an associate professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.  WYN 106.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Peabody baseball center fielder Kaden McClellan made an over-the-shoulder bare-handed catch on April 21 that was featured as the No. 1 play on ESPN’s SportsCenter during a 7-3 loss to Westview — the sophomore is hitting .364 this season and played in a rematch against Westview on April 22 in Trenton.  The Jackson Sun
