  • Cypress Grove Nature Park is celebrating Arbor Day today. Families can join a guided nature walk & tree-themed activities to learn about local plants.  WNBJ 39
  • Lifeline Blood Services announced that donor Mr. Roger Hendrix won a MZ Magnum Bad Boy mower donated by Bob’s House of Honda. He received his prize on April 23 at Lifeline during a presentation in Jackson.  WBBJ TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dyersburg State Community College’s Jimmy Naifeh Center will showcase Leatha Frost’s colorful abstract paintings until June 30; the artist reception is on April 30 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Ripley Power and Light lobby of the Learning Resource Center (refreshments provided).  WBBJ-TV
  • Ballet Arts of Jackson presents Little Mermaid with three public shows — the performance is today at 7 p.m., Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. Ticket sales for a pre-show tea party ended last Thursday.  WBBJ TV

  • High pollen levels during spring can etch car paint in West Tennessee, experts say; they advise regular washing and waxing to protect vehicles and recommend parking away from trees to avoid extra damage.  WBBJ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Jackson Transportation Authority reopened its renovated Transfer Center (new upgrades provide a comfortable waiting area for passengers) on Friday, April 24. Staff say the improvements will help streamline service and offer shelter from extreme weather in Jackson.  WNBJ 39

HEALTH NEWS

  • A message received at 5:17 p.m. sparked a multi-agency response — authorities checked three addresses in Brownsville and Humboldt to locate someone in crisis. Mental health experts remind anyone suffering to call or text 988 for immediate help.  WBBJ-TV
  • Jackson-Madison County General Hospital is building a Highly Infectious Disease unit to better care for patients following COVID challenges + the new unit is expected to be finished by the end of 2026.  WBBJ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Union Andrew Westmoreland made history in the GSC championship earlier today by setting a record during the game. He led his team to a breakthrough win that has energized local fans.  WYN 106.9
  • USJ has named Tre’mon Cockrell as the next Head Middle School Football Coach at its middle school. He will start his role soon to lead the local team and help prepare for upcoming games.  WYN 106.9
  • Ty Simpson, a Martin native and standout at Westview, was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the first round of the NFL Draft on April 23. He posted strong stats at Alabama last season with 3,567 yards+28 touchdowns, showing promise for his new role.  The Jackson Sun
