CRIME NEWS

  • Federal authorities have indicted five people in West Tennessee on drug charges tied to a Mexican cartel as the group sold fentanyl, meth, and marijuana for over two years + officials seized 30,000 fentanyl pills, 16 pounds of meth, and 10 kilos of cocaine while all suspects now face multiple conspiracy charges.  WNBJ 39

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hatchie Birdfest, held from Friday through Sunday at the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center in Brownsville, began with a concert by The Dirt Pilgrims and offers free bird watching hikes, speaker sessions and vendor demonstrations at Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge—giving both beginners and expert birders a hands-on chance to see over 200 bird species.   WYN 106.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • An Insurance Canopy study ranked Tennessee among the worst states for teachers, placing it at No. 43 overall with an average pay of $60,969 and ranking No. 48 for overall salaries—Teacher Appreciation Week will run May 5—May 9 as the state prepares to highlight its educators.  The Jackson Sun
  • Deborah McLean, a Pre-K through 6 music and art teacher at Alamo City School, is honored as Educator of the Week by the Tennessee Education Lottery after 48 years in teaching. She uses creative methods — like puppets and puzzles — to help her students learn and enjoy their classes.  WYN 106.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security is preparing for increased demand as May 7 REAL ID implementation approaches and has added Saturday appointments at select Driver Services Centers to serve Tennesseans better. Officials stressed that REAL ID is optional for daily activities + advised travelers to apply 30 days before flying to avoid delays.  WBBJ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, many law enforcement agencies in West TN join National Drug Take Back Day — a program to safely dispose of unwanted medications — to help stop opioid addiction. The DEA says removing unused prescriptions is key to preventing misuse and addiction.  WNBJ 39
