Good morning, Jackson. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 5th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Jackson-Madison County Chapter of the NAACP—over 100 years old—will hold its upcoming Freedom Fund Banquet soon, marking a continuation of a legacy that began during a time of national unrest across Tennessee and the country. The event will honor the chapter's long history and commitment to civil rights.  The Jackson Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teacher Appreciation Week runs from May 5 to May 9 and many food chains in Tennessee are offering educators free or discounted meals, including free fries at Burger King and 20% off at Buffalo Wild Wings. Teachers must show a valid school ID to take advantage of deals from local chains such as Applebee's and McDonald’s.  The Jackson Sun

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Jackson residents are warned not to release pet goldfish into natural waters as they breed in local ponds (such as the Lotus Pond at Ijams Nature Center) and harm native species. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency says releasing these fish violates state law (which upsets local ecosystems) so owners should find safer ways to rehome them.  The Jackson Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ray and Mascari Inc. recalled its 4 Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes (sold in plastic clamshell containers) at Gordon Food Service Stores in 11 states including Tennessee for possible salmonella contamination from Hanshaw and Capling Farms (Florida). The FDA said no illnesses have been reported.  The Jackson Sun

SPORTS NEWS

  • The West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex will host the TMSAA Class A Section 4 Baseball and Softball Tournaments starting today and running until May 8—top middle school teams from Jackson and nearby areas will compete for a berth in the state championships.  WYN 106.9
