  • The Community Foundation of West Tennessee has opened nominations for the 2026 Jackson Awards to honor local leaders in arts, education, healthcare, leadership and volunteer service. Nominations run until June 30 and the awards will be presented on November 14.  WNBJ 39
  • ComeUnity Cafe will host a Mother's Day fundraising luncheon on Saturday, May 9 at 11 a.m. at its downtown venue (218 East Main Street) to honor area mothers and caregivers; tickets cost $50 per person and support the donation-based cafe.  WBBJ-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spirit Airlines ended its operations on May 2 due to rising fuel costs and persistent financial struggles. Tennessee airports are losing six nonstop routes — prompting Nashville and Memphis travelers to seek other carriers for their trips.  The Jackson Sun

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Tennessee have hit $4.03 per gallon for the first time since last July, with Jackson pumps reading $4.10—a rise of 18 cents in one month. AAA data points to higher crude oil costs from an ongoing conflict as a key factor, and prices may climb further this week.  WBBJ TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jackson-Madison County Schools honored students who scored 30 or higher on the ACT on Monday as district leaders noted a steady rise in high scores. The ceremony celebrated academic success and set high expectations for future achievements.  WNBJ 39
  • The Community Foundation of West Tennessee partners with the Central West Tennessee Association of Realtors to award $9,000 in scholarships to local students & will host a reception on May 8 at 1:00 p.m. at the CWTAR office on Old Humboldt Rd.  WBBJ-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tennessee’s spring squirrel hunting season opens Saturday, May 9 and runs until Sunday, June 14; hunters can harvest up to 10 squirrels daily & must check local wildlife management area rules as two species remain protected.  WBBJ-TV

  • Bethel Cedrion Cook and Hudson Wallace earned All-Conference honors in track and field today after strong performances at college meets.  WBBJ-TV
  • Tennessee baseball must avoid a sweep by Texas and Oklahoma in its upcoming SEC series (starting May 8) to secure an NCAA Tournament berth; a surge in home runs has raised hopes despite earlier struggles.  The Jackson Sun
