COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity will host Project Playhouse 2026 to raise funds for safe, affordable housing. Local teams will assemble and decorate playhouse kits on June 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 91 New Market (downtown), and the finished playhouses will be donated to families in need.  WNBJ 39
  • The Jackson Area Ministerial Association will host the 2026 Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast tomorrow, May 7, at the Carl Perkins Civic Center. Tickets remain available for individual & table purchases online.  WNBJ 39

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Tornadoes hit West Tennessee Friday, killing at least 7 people in McNairy County and damaging homes, roads, and power lines in Bethel Springs, Selmer, Purdy, and Rose Creek, with Hardin and Haywood counties also affected (officials urge outsiders to avoid impacted areas during cleanup).  WBBJ-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • According to state data, Tennessee residents wagered $5.87 billion on sports in 2025—more than the GDP of three dozen countries. The large bets generated $108 million in tax revenue and have spurred talks on stricter betting rules as officials brace for another record year.  The Jackson Sun

  • Unofficial May 5 primary results for the school board show District 1 candidate Pete Johnson will join the Aug. 6 ballot as an Independent, Harvey Walden won District 4, Jason Compton was unopposed, Marcia Moss topped District 5, and Ann Van Der Linde led District 6.   • Healthy Hair Lice Clinic opened in Jackson today to provide pesticide-free lice treatments including full-service care and an express option. The clinic at 250 North Parkway, Suite 30 was started by healthcare professionals to ease the stress of lice infestations.  WBBJ-TV

  • Coach Josh Heupel favors a 24-team playoff that would give Tennessee football more postseason chances, with the change set to begin in 2027. The proposal, discussed on a recent podcast, has critics warning that lowering win standards could increase pressure on coaches.  The Jackson Sun
