  • At the Red Cross Heroes Luncheon in Hub City at Union University’s Grant Center, volunteers are honored—Harold Nance is named Humanitarian of the Year, Pam Shumate is chosen Volunteer of the Year and Larry Jarnigan is recognized as Uniformed Hero; Michael Banks said the event, ongoing for over 12 years, supports disaster relief throughout 17 counties in West Tennessee.  WYN 106.9

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Old Country Store in Jackson will host a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. on May 16 to mark its 60th anniversary. The celebration will feature dining and retail discounts, free admission to the Casey Jones Train Museum and Mini Golf, and the new Casey Jones Village Fun Pass with buffet perks—offers available on May 16-17.  WBBJ-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • After an extensive investigation, the Madison County Sheriff's Office arrested Shannon Danika Rowe for the first-degree murder of Christine Joan Lawrence, who was found deceased in a ditch off St. Johns Road on August 6—Rowe is held at the Criminal Justice Complex pending her first court appearance—confirming a major breakthrough in the long-running case.  WBBJ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Gathering concert — featuring world renowned Gospel artists and guest performers including Jackson native E.J. Shelton — will take place at the Ned R. McWherter Cultural Arts Center on May 12 at 6:30 p.m. Organizers say the event will also include special giveaways and a tribute to the Tyler Spann Foundation to honor water safety and hope.  WNBJ 39
  • The Amp Music Concert Series began its 11th season on Friday, April 25 at Jackson's Amphitheatre at the Market behind the West Tennessee Farmers' Market with Marcus Scott headlining. The series will include ten more concerts featuring artists such as Music By Kota and Stacy Mitchart while offering free admission supported by local sponsors.  The Jackson Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Jackson schools were awarded TVA School Uplift grants & the Jackson Academic STEAM Academy received $10,000 while Arlington Elementary got $25,000. The grants will help improve programs in the schools.  WNBJ 39
  • The M.D. Anderson Planetarium in Jackson will host 'The Dark Matter Mystery' presentations — one on May 20 at 5:30 p.m. and another on May 23 at 1:30 p.m. — with doors opening 15 minutes before each show.  WNBJ 39

  • At Tuesday's city council meeting, Mayor Scott Conger honored a Jackson Police officer for a life-saving act—city leaders praised his bravery and commitment to service.  The Jackson Post
