- ➤ Area Relief Ministries hosted a special breakfast at First United Methodist Church in downtown Jackson on Thursday morning to thank churches and volunteers and to mark a successful season of its Room in the Inn program—an initiative that offers men emergency shelter during winter. WYN 106.9
- ➤ Letter carriers in Jackson will collect non-perishable food donations for the national Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 10—residents should leave boxes or cans by their mailboxes so that carriers can deliver them to local food banks, pantries, and shelters. WYN 106.9

- ➤ The Madison County Sheriff’s Office announced an arrest in connection with the murder of Christine Joan Lawrence as Shannon Danika Rowe is charged with first-degree murder for her killing last summer in western Madison County. WNBJ 39
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Faculty, staff and students at Rose Hill met a school challenge to read 20 books with 170 students and 17 staff reaching the goal. They celebrated on Thursday with a pizza party, fun activities and prizes including books signed by authors and a huge inflatable slide. WBBJ-TV
- ➤ Fourth-grade students from 15 schools attended the 'Litter Bugs Me' expo held yesterday at the Jackson Fairgrounds and learned how to recycle and keep their community clean—about 1,500 kids saw emergency city vehicles during the event. Waste Management sponsored the expo and donated funds, earning a certificate of recognition, while recycling coordinator Derek Marshall Jr. said the lessons are key to preventing litter. WNBJ 39
- ➤ The Jackson-Madison County Library is offering Tai Chi classes to the public—an exercise that is gentle on the joints and works for all ages—with the next session scheduled for May 13 at 10 a.m. WNBJ 39
- ➤ University of Memphis student Mateo Flores, a first-generation high school and college graduate, will finish his Bachelor of Science in Nursing this Saturday at Lambuth campus.
