  • The West Tennessee Veteran Coalition will host an Armed Forces Day Bingo Run on May 17 at 9 a.m. at 1510 Highway 70 East in Jackson — bingo cards cost $15 each or five for $50 — and all proceeds will support the Veteran in Crisis Grant Fund to help local veterans with emergency needs.  WNBJ 39

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lowe's offers a free MyLowe's Rewards membership that lets shoppers earn points on purchases and receive tiered benefits like free shipping (with orders $35 or more) during the MyLowe's Rewards Week sale from May 8 through May 14. Today at local Lowe's stores, the first 150 loyalty members will get free gifts (such as sunglasses and pencils) and a chance to spin a prize wheel.  The Jackson Sun

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rural counties will get $45 million from the TN Rural Development Fund to support road improvements, new businesses, and community projects after Gov. Bill Lee’s FY 2025–26 budget was approved—Commissioner Stuart McWhorter explained the plan on a May 8 podcast with Senator Marsha Blackburn.  The Jackson Sun
  • United Ways of Tennessee and United For ALICE released a report today that shows 44% of households in Tennessee cannot afford basic needs such as housing, food, child care, transportation, health care, and technology—14% are in poverty while 30% fall under the ALICE category. The report also found that a family of four needs a household survival budget of $74,796 and noted that inflation continues to push costs above wage growth.  WYN 106.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Madison County reached a historic milestone by surpassing 100,000 residents, with latest estimates showing a count of 100,409 as of July 1—County Mayor AJ Massey said steady growth has led to strategic plans for updating public safety, transportation and infrastructure. Future initiatives will focus on meeting the rising demand for services in our community.  WBBJ-TV
  • Tennessee Governor Bill Lee visited Jackson on Tuesday afternoon and met with DOT Commissioner Butch Eley and state lawmakers to announce plans for a historic investment in state infrastructure — a move that could lead to new transportation projects statewide.  The Jackson Post
