COMMUNITY NEWS

  • AAA projects 950,000 Tennesseans will travel at least 50 miles from home this Memorial Day weekend (including 795,000 by car), setting a holiday record. Local drivers are urged to plan routes and inspect vehicles as high gas prices and heavy traffic may affect travel.  WBBJ-TV
  • Golfers competed Monday in the Flint Cox Golf Invitational at Jackson Country Club on Country Club Lane to raise funds for the Star Center, which provides art, music and speech therapy for people with disabilities statewide. CULTURE NEWS

  • The 88th annual Grand Floats Parade is part of the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival and is set for later this week—featuring decorated floats and local groups to brighten the community event.  WBBJ-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Tennessee surged last week (peaking at about $4.21 per gallon) before easing to an average of $4.15 today; in Jackson, pumps list around $4.17 amid forecasts that Memorial Day weekend fuel costs will be higher than last year.  WBBJ TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The community will host the 17th annual Celebration of Life for Jerome Ellington, where his family will award 10 high school senior scholarships during an event with food, prayer, and singing. The ceremony honors his legacy and includes support from past scholarship recipients.  WBBJ TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chester County officials are exploring a change in ambulance providers after Med Center EMS raised its price by 41%, sparking debate over costs and service quality. The commission meets tonight at 7 p.m. at the county courthouse (officials are negotiating with providers).  WBBJ TV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Old Hickory Mall is listed for sale by Chattanooga-based CBL Properties at 2021 North Highland Avenue — a confidential listing that requires a non-disclosure agreement. Vacancies have grown as new leases were added without notifying stores while the mall remains open during regular hours.  WBBJ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • North Side Flag Football earned a spot in the state tournament after winning playoff games, and the team will compete against top local teams soon. Local fans can look forward to exciting matches as the tournament unfolds.  WBBJ-TV
