COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jackson Animal Care and Control was awarded a Ready for Rescue grant to launch a B.A.R.K. program that lets community members take shelter dogs on day trips — the program aims to boost socialization and increase adoption chances.  WNBJ 39

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices have reached $4 a gallon this summer and, although some locals worry about long trips, Visit Jackson TN CEO Beth Bolton said drivable destinations are expected to keep tourism strong — locals can still enjoy affordable vacation plans.  WNBJ 39

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Jackson-Madison County School System launched a pilot program to empower educators by offering new training and classroom support. The initiative began yesterday (May 14) and aims to build teacher skills across local schools.  WBBJ-TV
  • Jackson-Madison County School Board approved its final budget that raises pay for educators & staff, launches a student agent pilot for about 700 students, and funds facility improvements and new buses. The budget now awaits Madison County Commission approval in June.  WBBJ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tennessee has launched a new program that lets families of National Guard service members receive both a Tennessee state flag and an American flag during military honors. The change, supported by veterans and the youth council, honors the service of soldiers and is now available for funeral arrangements in Jackson.  WBBJ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials are tracking cruise ship passengers and anyone nearby for possible hantavirus exposure, noting that the virus rarely spreads between people and is linked to rodent droppings in enclosed spaces. Exposed individuals are monitoring for symptoms over a six-week period.  WBBJ TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Crockett County Baseball beat Lakeland Prep on May 14 to secure a spot in the state tournament — a win that boosts their postseason hopes.  WBBJ-TV
  • USJ lady Bruins won game one of substate play on May 14, and Milan Bulldogs swept Riverside while McNairy Central lady Bobcats captured a region title with a 7-3 win. Kentucky Lake’s revival buoyed Bassmaster Open hopes as local sports also reported a coaching change and a notable player’s passing.  WBBJ-TV
