  • The McNairy County Fire Department reported a garage fire in the Oxford Creek subdivision on Sunday; homeowners quickly extinguished the flames and saved their home and vehicles. The department said the fire is under investigation and urged residents to store flammables safely (risks include spontaneous combustion and chemical reactions).  WBBJ TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Brooks Shaw’s Old Country Store in Jackson was nominated for USA TODAY 10BEST’s Best Buffet Restaurant as experts selected it and readers vote once per day through June 15. The Southern restaurant has been in the top 10 for three years and is known for its comfort food and hospitality.  WBBJ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Community Montessori School in Jackson received a $210,000 TVA grant to improve energy efficiency for building upgrades. The funds will pay for LED lights, window tinting and thermostat updates before students return after summer break.  WNBJ 39

  • TDCI and the Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors are urging Jackson consumers to watch out for red flags in contractor deals during Contractor Fraud Awareness Week (May 18-22) and check credentials before starting any renovations.   • Tennessee enters peak tick season today as emergency room visits for tick bites have risen compared to past years; health officials urge residents to watch for fever and rash after a bite — signs that may indicate a tickborne illness.  The Jackson Sun

  • Goodpasture junior Brandon Leavell committed to Tennessee football on May 18 at Goodpasture auditorium after choosing the Volunteers over offers from schools like Florida State and Clemson.
