- ➤ Some local pools and splash pads are already open while others will open soon. Town of Selmer Splash Pad and Covington Aquatic Center are open — Milan City Pool opens May 23 while Okeena and Dyersburg Activity Center open May 26 and Ripley Pool opens June 1. WBBJ-TV
- ➤ The West Tennessee Veterans Coalition is supporting local veterans through its Veterans in Crisis program, which provides short-term aid including rent, transportation, and food needs to help them transition to civilian life as Memorial Day approaches (the program has aided over 170 veterans with more than $100,000 distributed). - ➤ A West Tennessee program—designed to support veterans transitioning to civilian life—offers job training, counseling and help accessing benefits. The initiative strengthens local support by easing veterans’ reintegration into work and community life. WBBJ-TV
- ➤ Every May, the Jackson Exchange Club will host its Field of Flags ceremony to honor the nation, public servants, and abuse victims in front of First (location as announced) to celebrate community patriotism. The Jackson Post

- ➤ The Burke Cabinet and Floor opened in February and continues a three-generation family tradition in Jackson. Brothers Rickey and Robbie Burke now focus on cabinets, kitchen remodels, and plan to expand to full kitchen and bath renovations while introducing the new product (Invisicook). WBBJ-TV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Tennessee Department of Education released third grade reading scores to districts on May 18, setting a fast-moving timeline for students to avoid retention; those below proficiency can retake tests, enroll in summer school + receive tutoring, with an appeal window from May 28 to June 26 and final decisions in July. - ➤ Project Search graduated four interns from hospital work yesterday. The program, a partnership between West Tennessee Healthcare, Jackson-Madison County Schools & STAR Center, has supported high school students with special needs for 11 years. The Jackson Post
- ➤ Students from Rose Hill Middle School won the Green Power USA F-24 Intermediate Stock Division championship this past weekend at Talladega Superspeedway, building their car from scratch and becoming the first team from Tennessee to earn the national title. WBBJ-TV
- ➤ The Rose Hill Greenpower team won a national championship as teacher Whitney Hogg—who has taught at the school for 10 years—led them to victory, marking a proud moment for the local education community. The Jackson Post
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Jackson has received the 2026 Driving Mobility and Accessibility on Public Lands Grant from the National Environmental Education Foundation to improve walkways in Conger Park. - ➤ Some packages of Kroger Homestyle Cheese Garlic Croutons in 5oz pouches are being recalled for a potential Salmonella risk due to milk powder in the seasoning, so Jackson customers should check their purchases and return affected products or call Sugar Foods LLC (332) 240-6676. - ➤ Jack Veazey of JCS won his third straight state championship on Friday, May 15 before graduating from high school. His win capped a standout career in local sports & boosted community pride. The Jackson Post
- ➤ The NFL has awarded Super Bowl 64 to Nashville to be played in the new Nissan Stadium in 2030; the state appropriated $1 billion for the venue, which is planned to host concerts and events as early as 2027. WBBJ-TV
