  • Officer Taylor Gibbons rescued a kitten soaked in a chemical cleaning agent and, with paramedic Gabrielle Pride from the Fire Department, promptly washed it to remove toxins — Pride will adopt the kitten to give it a new home.  WYN 106.9
  • The Jackson-Madison County Library will host summer LEGO and game afternoons starting June 5 every Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m. Children can use the library’s large collection of LEGO, DUPLO bricks, and board games to enjoy creative play sessions.  WNBJ 39

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Captain D’s will open a new restaurant in Jackson on Memorial Day at 73 Chloe Place Dr in Park Place West so locals can enjoy fast casual seafood. Multi-unit franchisee Joe Springer is launching his third Captain D’s this year as the 24th location under his brand.  WBBJ TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kimberly Evans was named the new director of Ballet Arts of Jackson after nearly ten years of involvement with the school (her daughter Sophia has attended classes there). She will now lead the local dance program and help shape its future.  The Jackson Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Tennessee Higher Education Commission announced on May 21 that 20 colleges, including TCAT Jackson, received grants of up to $2 million—grants that will expand health care career programs in rural areas. The awards will help more rural students access jobs in health care, behavioral health, and dental fields.  WBBJ-TV

FINANCE NEWS

  • Severe storms on May 20 brought large hail and a tornado to Jackson, damaging vehicles and testing auto insurance limits. Car owners should check if their policy includes comprehensive coverage (which covers natural disasters) and follow their insurer's claim process (providing photos and repair estimates) to be properly reimbursed.  The Jackson Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials say a salmonella outbreak tied to cucumbers grown by Florida-based Bedner Growers has sickened 26 people, including some in Tennessee, with nine hospitalized. Officials warn consumers to discard cucumbers bought between April 29 and May 14 and to thoroughly clean any surfaces that may have come in contact with them.  The Jackson Sun
