COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jackson Recreation and Parks Ceramics will host Bowls for the Hungry on July 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Jackson Fairgrounds, where community members can buy ceramic bowls to raise funds for a nonprofit aiding hunger and housing.  WBBJ-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • During Memorial Day travel the Tennessee Highway Patrol recorded one traffic fatality statewide, a steep drop from eight last year; officials credited safer driving practices such as slower speeds and consistent seat belt use for the improvement. Troopers focused their enforcement on speeding, impaired and distracted driving along state highways.  WBBJ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Northside Church will host Encore, a youth musical by 24 local students (6th-12th grades) with free admission and a nursery available; the shows are scheduled for Friday, May 29 at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 30 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, May 31 at 3 p.m. at the church.  WBBJ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jackson Academic STEM Academy offers a new virtual STEM program where students learn from home and at the school for hands-on projects. STEM Coordinator Megan Barker explained that this flexible system secured a unique state designation (a first in Tennessee).  WBBJ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson Fire Department will conduct a citywide smoke alarm installation blitz on Wednesday, June 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to support its (Project ESCAPE) campaign by installing free alarms and providing fire safety education to residents.  WBBJ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello (now with the Giants) said the Vols are capable in the Chapel Hill Regional. No. 25 Tennessee will face No. 3 seed East Carolina on May 29 at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill.  The Jackson Sun
