COMMUNITY NEWS

  • RIFA's Bus Stop Cafe uses a colorful bus (designed for children) to serve free meals and snack backpacks during spring, fall, and summer breaks. The bus stops at eight community locations and works with local elementary school counselors to help vulnerable kids.  WBBJ TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Jackson Fire Department crews are performing multiple water rescues after heavy rains caused flooding on North Royal street, and they urge residents not to drive through flooded roads (or bypass barricades).  WBBJ-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new plant shop in west Jackson held its dedication today and offers a range of plants along with plant bingo and educational classes — with kids classes planned for summer. The shop is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 to 6 at 219 North Parkway, Suite 6.  WBBJ-TV
  • Local dessert shops Maggie Moo's & Great American Cookies have launched a summer contest offering 10 winners free ice cream for a year. The giveaway is open online and at the shop on 1032 A Vann Drive in north Jackson until June 15.  WBBJ-TV
  • The family-owned Jacks Creek feed store opened its doors Friday in Chester County, offering animal feed for chickens, dogs, horses and more while food trucks provided treats and the owners plan later hours for working residents + added input on product selection to meet community needs.  WBBJ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The month-long celebration of Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage ended on Friday at City Hall with an art gallery + musical performances and a proclamation by Mayor Scott Conger.  WNBJ 39

ECONOMY NEWS

  • According to the Tennessee Department of Labor, 89 of 95 counties had unemployment rates below 5 percent in April (Hardeman County was around 5 percent while Lake County was 4.7 percent), and the overall state rate stood at 3.6 percent.  WNBJ 39

EDUCATION NEWS

  • TCAT Jackson saw enrollment rise this summer as it piloted an AI tutoring tool to boost hands-on learning in high-tech careers. The school said the new programs combine practical training + theory to better prepare students for evolving manufacturing roles.  WBBJ-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local wildlife officials reminded residents that fawns appearing alone are not abandoned but are waiting for their mothers; they advise leaving them alone unless the animal is in immediate danger + for example, near busy roads +.  WBBJ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tony Black retired from Jackson Parks & Recreation after 30 years; a celebration was held today at the Carl Perkins Civic Center before he begins his new role as the Jackson-Madison County School System’s first full-time athletic director.  WBBJ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tennessee’s softball team will face Texas Tech today at Devon Park at 3 p.m. ET for a chance to advance to the WCWS semifinals. The No. 7 Lady Vols meet elite pitchers and former team member Taylor Pannell in a high-stakes matchup.  The Jackson Sun
