COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South kicked off its free Summer Meal Program in Madison County on Friday—providing families seven days’ worth of meals at a designated location until August 2. Dominiqua Hibbler said families need only visit the website to find the site—fill out paperwork—and pick up free lunches.  WNBJ 39
  • Downtown Jackson will open the Lavender Trail on June 1 as part of its walkability campaign+ local businesses will showcase lavender-themed products to invite residents to explore and shop throughout the month.  WNBJ 39
  • Jackson Parks and Recreation said the public pools will open the first week of June with hours Monday through Saturday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm and cost $2 per swim, with kids eight and younger needing a parent at the pool. The department added that the pools will support summer camps and offer a free water safety clinic (June 14 at T.R. White Sportsplex).  WNBJ 39

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Jackson launched the new Open Finance Portal today to provide clear data on city spending—allowing residents to view updated transactions. Residents can browse records and search transactions by date—helping local taxpayers understand how funds are used.  WNBJ 39
  • On May 29, Jackson residents gathered outside City Hall to protest Mayor Conger’s proposal to raise property taxes from $1.6114 to $1.85 and to double the fee for city vehicle stickers, a change that would add an extra $10 to $12 per month for many homeowners—organizers plan another rally ahead of the June 3 council meeting.  The Jackson Sun
  • After a Thursday night budget meeting, Mayor Conger announced that unfunded capital projects—such as roadwork and equipment purchases—will be cut from the proposed budget to protect reserve funds and reduce the deficit. Councilwoman Wallace has requested a list of the removed projects, and Conger urged the City Council to start long-term financial planning in July.  WNBJ 39
  • The Tennessee Highway Patrol released a schedule of sobriety and seat belt checkpoints for June 2025—set to run along major roads in Memphis District 4 and Jackson District 8 to deter impaired driving in the state, and the stops will occur throughout early to late June.  WBBJ-TV
