COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Jackson’s Lavender Trail began on June 1 as part of the Jackson Downtown Development Corporation’s walkability campaign, inviting residents to explore local businesses featuring lavender-themed products — and encouraging shoppers to share their experiences on social media.  WYN 106.9

CRIME NEWS

  • On October 31, 2022, Jackson Police responded to a shots-fired call at the Rodeway Inn where Travis Hulsey died after being lured into a hotel room for a robbery and, after video evidence implicated the suspects, Charles Wilson was sentenced to 23 years, James Brown received 35 years, and Keyanna Massengill got a reduced sentence — the court proceedings have now concluded.  WBBJ-TV
  • Crime Stoppers hosted its 33rd annual fundraising golf tournament this afternoon at Jackson National Golf Course with registration at 11 a.m. and the 18‑hole scramble starting at 12 p.m.—all funds raised will be used to pay cash rewards to tip callers and include a $500 prize for the winning team.  WYN 106.9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jeff and Sheri Easter will perform a gospel concert at the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson on July 12 at 6 p.m. (the venue is at 400 South Highland Avenue) as they continue their long musical ministry rooted in legendary gospel music families.  WNBJ 39

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Donnell Century Farm hosted a weeklong summer camp that taught kids about faith and farming—where they learned about cotton, cared for animals, and did chores on Monday. The farm will run another weeklong camp next week to offer more fun farm activities.  WBBJ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Conger emailed the city council urging them to plan a long-term finance strategy for Jackson after a budget meeting. His plan calls for cutting non-grant funds from the capital budget—ensuring the tax rate stays unchanged—and 39 News will cover the council meeting today.  WNBJ 39
  • Tennessee Gov Bill Lee signed a bill today that will regulate hemp products beginning on Jan. 1 by banning THCA and synthetic cannabinoids and limiting hemp-derived products to 0.3% THC. The law (House Bill 1376) also shifts oversight from the Department of Agriculture to the Alcoholic Beverage Commission.  The Jackson Sun
  • The City of Jackson launched a new Open Finance Portal that lets residents see how tax dollars are spent with weekly data updates—showing budget parts and spending details. City officials believe the tool will make government work clearer and invite residents to ask questions if they need more information.  WBBJ TV
  • Jackson City Councilwoman Candace Busby rejected Mayor Scott Conger's proposed tax hikes and vowed to oppose any measure that would cut funding for police or fire services—she said the City Charter gives budget authority to the Council.  WNBJ 39
