GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Jackson passed an ordinance that lets fireworks stands sell fireworks for July 4. Vendors will sell fireworks from June 20 to July 5 (8 a.m. to 11 p.m.) and residents can light them from June 30 to July 5 (with extended hours on July 4).  WYN 106.9
  • The Carl Perkins Civic Center in downtown Jackson is undergoing a two-phase remodel—phase one includes painting the auditorium and floors and installing new drape packages while phase two will feature an open house to show off new risers and seating for up to 1,921 guests. The upgrades are expected to finish in late January and rental costs range from $250 to $1,600.  WYN 106.9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Recent restaurant inspection scores for food establishments across West Tennessee were released for June 6—13. The scores ranged from 80 to 100 at venues in Jackson and other nearby counties, showing a mixed record of health inspections.  WYN 106.9
  • The Tennessee Center for Health Workforce Development awarded $2,000 to Annah Powell, a South Side High School graduate from the Class of 2025, who plans to study radiologic technology. The award encourages high school seniors to pursue healthcare careers—recipients may get an extra $2,000 after their first college year and Powell is one of 30 awardees this year.  WYN 106.9

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • On Father's Day, June 15, several restaurant chains including Burger King, Dave and Buster's, IHOP, and Newk's Eatery will offer special deals for dads—Burger King has a BOGO Whopper deal, Dave and Buster's offers 50% off food for loyalty members, IHOP gives 20% off pickup orders, and Newk's provides a free dessert with an entree. These discounts are part of ongoing promotions to celebrate Father's Day across the state.  The Jackson Sun

SPORTS NEWS

  • The first State Games of Tennessee took place in Jackson last weekend — athletes like Kevin McCants and pickleball gold medalist Renae Adelsberger enjoyed the games despite bad weather, while volunteers showed true southern hospitality.
