CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities issued arrest warrants today for Jose Inocencio Fraire Chavez (39) on charges of illegal alien in possession of a firearm, willful failure to comply with removal procedures, and flight to avoid prosecution following incidents in Obion County as federal and local agencies work together to locate him and his child, who have not been seen in Union City since May 2.  WYN 106.9

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Jackson-Madison County Library's North Branch at 8 Stonebridge Boulevard is hosting a free edu-tainment performance by Magic Mr. Nick that promises wonder, laughter, and learning for children and adults.   • Greater Vision will headline a Southern gospel concert at the Carl J. Perkins Civic Center in Jackson on July 9 at 7 p.m., and many additional artists will join the celebrated trio that has influenced gospel music since 1990.  WNBJ 39

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Margie Lester — the longtime voice of Jackson State Community College — passed away at 74 after a 51-year career that began in 1971, and her funeral is set for June 19th with visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Arrington Funeral Directors on University Parkway.  WBBJ TV
  • The Jackson-Madison County School System is hiring certified teachers—offering a starting salary of $51,000—and new hires may receive a $10,000 signing bonus.  WNBJ 39

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA warns that tianeptine—known as gas station heroin—can be harmful and even fatal in high doses, as it is sold as a dietary supplement without approval. Tennessee has banned the substance while it remains available in other states, posing serious health risks.  The Jackson Sun

SPORTS NEWS

  • During the weekend of June 14 and 15, athletes from across Tennessee competed in the second weekend of the inaugural State Games of Tennessee in Jackson, running a 5K Trail Run at Pugh Bourne Park, playing cornhole at the Jackson Fairgrounds and competing in disc golf at The Bend on Highland as well as a 5K run that began at the Farmer's Market. A final wedge tournament will take place on June 22 at Hub City Brewing—gold medal winners in each event can qualify for the State Games of America in 2026.  The Jackson Sun
