COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, AARP announced six Tennessee organizations will receive Community Challenge grants to fund projects that improve public spaces, housing, and digital connections. The City of Jackson will host an ADU design competition—aimed at easing aging in place—and will offer three pre-approved plans to help homeowners build accessory dwelling units.  WBBJ TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Perrys, an award-winning gospel group, will perform on July 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the Carl J. Perkins Civic Center in Jackson. The group is known for hits like I Wish I Could Have Been There and If You Knew Him and has captivated audiences across North America.  WNBJ 39
  • Miss Volunteer America contestants visited the Jackson Rotary Club on Wednesday — they shared a meal and introduced themselves on stage as preliminary competitions began at 7 p.m. that evening. The pageant finals will take place on Saturday, June 21.  WBBJ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) was awarded a $300,000 grant from Jobs for the Future and the PricewaterhouseCoopers Foundation to support high-demand career programs; the funding will help the school expand training for in-demand jobs.  WNBJ 39

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New laws will take effect July 1 that change many rules in Tennessee—allowing residents to take boating tests online, get more protection when seeking help for an alcohol overdose, and face tougher DUI penalties. Other changes include stronger measures for child safety, consumer rights, and transportation.  WBBJ TV

  • Skaters from around the country have come to Jackson to show they have what it takes to be national champions at the 3rd annual Summer Jam held at Ritz Magic Wheels—winners will share over $20,000 in cash prizes.  WYN 106.9
