COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The third annual Bowls for the Hungry charity event will take place on July 19 at Jackson Fairgrounds Park and will feature live bands, speakers from local nonprofits, and a signature bowl auction with handmade ceramics. The auction is already underway online—charity organizers hope to build on last year’s success and impact more lives.  WBBJ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Longtime musicians say they were blindsided when management required re-auditions with only 19 days notice, and more than half of the orchestra will not return as the Jackson Symphony shifts its focus to become a fully professional ensemble—aiming for consistency and growth—and to raise its performance standards.  WNBJ 39

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the City of Jackson passed an ordinance allowing the sale and use of fireworks in the city. A poll showed 31% voted in favor — 69% opposed the move.  WYN 106.9
  • Councilwoman Candice Busby has organized a town hall for District 3 residents at Love and Truth Church on July 17 at 6:30 p.m.—The event will showcase free neighborhood services and financial counseling provided by the City’s Neighborhood Services Department and Office of Financial Empowerment.  WBBJ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department is running Back-to-School Boost Week from July 7th to 11th to offer required school immunizations paired with free supplies when parents call ahead—appointments are available throughout the week.  WYN 106.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • USJ finished a season with nine wins and one loss—becoming region champions and reaching the quarterfinals. Senior running back Noah Spencer earned Mr.Football and head coach Derrick Pritchard said the team will use returning seniors to build both offense and defense—planning to carry momentum from May into their first Northpoint game.  WYN 106.9
