COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Exotic Pet Expo will return to the Jackson Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 16 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, August 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., where animal lovers and families will view exotic pets such as reptiles, small mammals, and parrots—vendors will also offer pet supplies for enthusiasts.  WNBJ 39

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 15th at 12:27 p.m., Jackson Police responded to a shooting near the 400 block of Preston St (shell casings were found) and arrested a 16-year-old male charged with reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm and tampering with evidence as well as an 18-year-old male, Jeremiah Forbis, charged with reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm and contempt of court (the investigation is still active).  WBBJ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson Rockabillys will host Yung Gravy in a live concert at Jackson Rockabilly Stadium on Saturday, July 26 — the band expects a lively show drawing local fans.  The Jackson Post
  • Caroline Meinert and Kimberly Evans from Ballet Arts of Jackson appeared on a local show one hour ago to share details on their upcoming season and exciting updates— they discussed plans for new performances and community events.  WYN 106.9

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tennessee’s tax-free weekend begins today and runs until July 27, when eligible clothing, school supplies (costing $100 or less per item) and computers priced at $1,500 or less are tax exempt, supporting back-to-school shopping. Shoppers should note that items such as sports gear, graduation caps and computer parts sold separately are not included.  The Jackson Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lane College announced that Dr. Lawrence T. Potter, Jr. will serve as its new Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs effective July 28. He brings over 27 years of higher education experience from roles at Canisius University and UDC — a move expected to strengthen the college's academic leadership.  WBBJ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Scott Conger explained on social media that the city did not help name the new Hub City Field at the JCM campus amid criticism over the field’s name. School board member Harvey Walden added that the interchangeable logos show the facility will host more than one team — clarifying the naming concerns.  WNBJ 39

HEALTH NEWS

  • COVID-19 cases are rising nationwide and in Tennessee where emergency room visits increased from 0.2% to 0.3% since June 22—wastewater levels stayed very low. The NB.1.8.1 variant is now dominant and may cause a painful sore throat known as razor blade throat.  The Jackson Sun
