COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jackson residents can vote in West Tennessee magazine's Best in Jackson contest for their favorite restaurant, business, or community organization—voting runs through August 31.  WNBJ 39

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A report released earlier this week detailed restaurant inspection scores in West Tennessee from August 8 to 14, showing many Jackson establishments earned scores of 100 while some received as low as 75. The report covers restaurants from several counties + gives consumers a clear picture of local food safety.  WYN 106.9

CRIME NEWS

  • Following Austin Drummond's virtual court appearance on Thursday (Aug 14), attorney Bryan Huffman said that Drummond is coping with serious charges.  WYN 106.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hunter Sims from Scotts Hill High School—a member of the FFA—was named a national finalist for the Agricultural Mechanics Design and Fabrication Proficiency Award and is one of only four finalists chosen from over one million students nationwide. He will compete against top FFA members in the ongoing national competition.  WBBJ-TV
  • The Tennessee Valley Authority awarded funding to 179 schools, including two in Jackson, as the Malesus STEM Innovation Center received $2,500 for robotics projects for sixth- to eighth-grade students—Denmark Elementary received $5,000 to compete in robotics competitions.  WNBJ 39

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Obion, Hardeman and McNairy counties who were affected by the April storms must apply for FEMA aid by Tuesday, August 19. They can visit the Obion County Library at 12-21 East Reelfoot Avenue in Union City, the safe haven storm shelter at 530 Madison Avenue West in Grand Junction, call 1-800-621-3362, or apply online for help with home repairs, rental assistance and moving expenses.  WBBJ-TV
