COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today at Jackson Regional Airport, firefighters, law enforcement officers, TSA agents, county commissioners, and Mayor Massey gathered to honor the victims of 9/11 and reflect on its impact on aviation security. The ceremony recognized first responders for their continued service that changed how we fly.  WYN 106.9
  • Hope Café & Store is hosting a mum sale through September 17 at 701 South Royal Street in Jackson—each purchase helps a person in recovery.  WBBJ-TV
  • The Jackson Fire Department raised flags at Station One and its firefighters climbed 110 floors to honor 9/11 victims and the 343 firefighters who died during rescue efforts—this tribute took place on Thursday as part of nationwide remembrances.  WNBJ 39
  • Jackson will host the Hub City BBQ Fest on October 3 and 4 on West Lafayette Street—this two-day event will feature competitive barbecue, live entertainment and a partnership with the Jacob Barker Music Fest.  WNBJ 39

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Steve Beverly, a beloved broadcaster hit by a car at a Florida Walmart parking lot, is recovering with a lacerated lung, two fractured vertebrae, and two broken ribs while community members gathered today at Jackson Energy Authority on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive to pray for his healing—he will not need surgery.  WNBJ 39

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kellanova in East Jackson and TCAT have joined forces to train modern technicians for snack production as part of the company's 55-year role in powering Jackson's industry—this partnership will update skills to meet new manufacturing needs.  The Jackson Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jackson State Community College leads Tennessee's two-year colleges with a total enrollment increase of 16.7% and a full-time boost of 15.6% from last fall—its enrollment now topping 4,000 as it opens registration for the spring semester.  WBBJ-TV
  • As students head back to class this fall, Scouting America is spotlighting the Cub Scouts program — a hands-on activity that builds teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership through projects and outdoor adventures. The program, backed by a 115-year-old organization, will help kids gain confidence and take their first steps toward independence.  WYN 106.9

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Jackson Fire Department launched a new line of shirts to support breast cancer awareness as October begins (T-shirts are available for pick-up while supplies last at $25 and long sleeve shirts are open for pre-order at $30). Fire training officer Rob Johnson said the team will wear the shirts throughout October to promote the cause.  WBBJ-TV
  • The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America advises people with asthma to follow their action plans and get vaccines as high ragweed, mold and viruses will challenge them this September — especially as children return to school. Local experts say that keeping indoor air clean is a key step — one that may help reduce asthma symptoms during the season.  WBBJ-TV

  • A high school football game in Madison County will see undefeated St. George’s face undefeated Jackson Christian, both with a 3-0 record—Jackson Christian won the previous meeting 35 to 26.  The Jackson Post
