COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community Montessori School in west Jackson held a Pinwheels for Peace event today that marked its third year participating in the project—students decorated pinwheels to show what peace means to them ahead of International Day of Peace on September 21.  WYN 106.9

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Friday, Jackson AMP ended its Summer Concert Series when local singer LOLO headlined the final show downtown. The concert started shortly after 7:30 p.m.—she performed well-known songs and AMP will plan next summer’s series under new leadership.  WYN 106.9
  • Jackson Doc Fest will host its fourth international documentary film festival awards and gala on October 18 at the Chambers-McClure Theater at Lane College — starting with a reception at 5:00 p.m. It will feature a tribute to local hero Carl Perkins, live music, and a ballet performance while the event remains free to the public.  WYN 106.9
  • The Jackson Arts Council announced a Creative Support Grant offering five $2,000 awards to local artists from any level—applications close on October 5.  WNBJ 39

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Amber Douglas, a visual arts teacher at Lexington High School, was named Educator of the Week by the Tennessee Education Lottery. She said she chose teaching after her first child was born & has used a guide-by-the-side method for 15 years while her daughter benefits from the Hope Scholarship.  WYN 106.9
  • Students and staff at Northeast Middle School held a surprise pink parade today to honor Principal Dr. Kimberly Quinn as she prepares for her final chemo treatment next week—she said the support gives her strength to keep fighting.  WNBJ 39

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A POW/MIA memorial ceremony was held at the Madison County Courthouse on Friday to honor soldiers lost in war—Colonel Travis McKnight spoke, a missing man table was presented, the color guard carried flags and the event closed with taps.  WYN 106.9

HEALTH NEWS

  • West Tennessee restaurant inspections from September 12 to 18 revealed many Jackson spots—such as Kirbys Seafood and More and Audette’s Academy For Early Learning—scored 100 while others ranged from 91 to 99 across multiple counties.  WYN 106.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • High school football scores for TSSAA Week 5 were posted after games played on September 19 in West Tennessee. The scoreboard lists matchups including ECS with 55 over Tipton-Rosemark 21 and Fairley with 66 over Bluff City 6 along with many other results.  The Jackson Sun
