COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Jackson will host a free Charitable Organization Fair on Sunday, November 9 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 309 East Baltimore Street—organized by the church’s Outreach Committee to celebrate an outreach milestone and highlight local West Tennessee charities that have benefited from its Meredith Endowment Fund.  WNBJ 39
  • Downtown Jackson is hosting First Friday from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at 300 East Main Street where residents and visitors can shop, enjoy food trucks, live music, and an art walk—additional events are planned for November 7 and December 5.  WNBJ 39
  • Residents will gather today at Fairground Park for the Hub City Flea Market—local artists and creators display their unique works. The event offers a chance for community members to share creative projects with neighbors.  WNBJ 39

CULTURE NEWS

  • Atlanta-based sculptor Fred Ajanogha explained that he spent over a year perfecting a Tina Turner statue for Brownsville. He said he worked to capture her movement and strength in her hair — a symbol of her power as a performer.  WYN 106.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson City Council members met on Thursday afternoon to discuss a $125,000 settlement with undisclosed details— they approved a $425,000 budget amendment to transfer funds to the senior center and said the move was budget neutral.  WBBJ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Madison County Health urges families in Jackson to get a flu shot at its clinic on North Parkway as the vaccine takes two weeks to build protection before flu season peaks—Dr. David Bryan said that vaccination is especially important for children, older adults, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions.  WBBJ-TV
  • On Thursday, a $250,000 check was presented to the Alice and Carl Kirkland Cancer Center after the Swinging Fore Hope golf tournament raised funds for patient needs — a sign of strong local support —. The donation will help cover medication, transportation, and housing costs for patients — as explained by former patient Ann Marie Kelley — in support of ongoing treatment services.  WBBJ-TV
  • Tracey McKnight has worked for more than 30 years with West Tennessee Healthcare and now leads Friends of Heart in Jackson—where she runs heart screenings at local schools and places AEDs around town to aid in emergencies. Her work is driven by personal loss—her family’s battles with heart disease—and aims to protect local lives.  WYN 106.9
  • October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a survey found that 80% of women fear health screenings because of the fear of results—Dr. Ifeyinwa Stitt urged patients to learn their family cancer history and consider genetic testing to better manage their health.  WYN 106.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kamari Blair, a Kirkwood High senior and Tennessee football commit, scored a touchdown and threw a pass during his team's 40-9 win over La Vergne on October 2—helping Kirkwood improve to a 6-1 record as coach Josh Heupel watched on.  The Jackson Sun
  • Bethel Athletic Hall-of-Fame induction and alumni awards ceremonies will take place to honor local athletes and sports figures—official details will be shared soon.  WYN 106.9
  • Yesterday, the Jackson-Madison County School System hosted an open house for the new Hub City Central football stadium on the Jackson Central-Merry High School campus — alumni returned to celebrate the facility adjacent to Oman Arena on Lane Avenue — and retired players praised its design. The cougars will host Gibson County Pioneers during homecoming today — kickoff is at 7 p.m. — as they begin their season on the brand-new field.  WBBJ-TV
