COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Jackson hosted a blessing service for animals on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., where members brought pets plus photos or stuffed toys for those unable to attend, and the church collected food donations for the Jackson Animal Care Center.  WYN 106.9
  • Deliverance House of Prayer at 101 Huntersville Demark Road in Denmark held a weekend full of games, food, and activities on Saturday+ a worship service on Sunday led by Bishop Nathaniel Bond. The church invited local families to join the event to share in a celebration of love and faith.  WBBJ TV
  • South Side High School hosted a parent engagement event Tuesday night, Sept. 30, where food trucks and grilling marked the celebration of a new tiny house project.  The Jackson Post
  • At the Amp in downtown Jackson, the 7th annual Jacob Barker Music Festival joined with the Hub City BBQ Festival to raise funds for Make-A-Wish as Ronnie Barker presented an $8,000 check on Saturday—boosting support for children’s wishes. The fundraiser aimed to increase attendance and continue the event’s tradition of helping local children.  WYN 106.9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jackson’s Hub City BBQ Fest ended Saturday as top grill masters competed in pulled pork, brisket and ribs. Memphis OG BBQ won for pulled pork while Mudville BBQ took Grand Champion with $14,000 in cash prizes—awarded at the two-day downtown event.  WYN 106.9
  • Today, Tennessee will see the Harvest Supermoon—the largest of three consecutive supermoons—rise close to sunset and reach peak brightness at 10:48 p.m. CT, making it appear larger and brighter as it stays visible for several nights.  The Jackson Sun

  • Retailers are holding major holiday sales events in early October, with Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days on October 7 and 8, Walmart Deals from October 7 through 12, Target Circle Week running from October 5 through 11, and Wayfair's 7 Days of Deals from October 7 through 13—giving Jackson shoppers a chance to begin holiday shopping early. Experts recommend setting budgets and making detailed gift lists to avoid last-minute stress before Black Friday on November 28 and Cyber Monday on December 1.  The Jackson Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • JMCSS students toured the Amcor manufacturing facility in West Jackson to learn about job opportunities, and the visit provided insight into the plant that has operated for nearly 40 years—since it started under Berry Manufacturing. This experience helped students understand real-world careers in our local industry.  The Jackson Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Bill Lee said on October 3 that he wants the state to expand its 20,000-scholarship private school voucher program next year so that more low-income families and families without income limits can get school choice grants — a move aimed at meeting high demand. The program, which offers 7,295 dollar grants and received over 42,000 applications, will need extra funds from the General Assembly.  The Jackson Sun
