COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hub City Brewing in Jackson is hosting a free Spooky Singo Night today from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at 250 West Main Street; the event invites music and movie fans to mark cards with familiar tunes as they compete for prizes.  WNBJ 39
  • Lisa Reasons—executive director of Adoption Services at Birth Choice—joined a local news show to discuss the agency's upcoming open house and ribbon cutting. The event will give local families a chance to learn about the services offered by the agency.  WYN 106.9
  • Shops at theLOCAL in downtown Jackson will host a free Family Halloween Party on November 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., where local shops offer candy, crafts and live music—this event is funded by the Love Your Block Neighborhood Improvement Grant.  WNBJ 39
  • Local food resources offer food banks, mobile pantries, and blessing boxes for residents facing food insecurity in our area. *Kingdom Support Solutions Mobile Food Pantry* at 130 Old Denmark Road will serve 200 families on Saturday, 11/22 with a first-come, first-serve policy.  WYN 106.9
  • On Tuesday, Scooter’s Coffee donated 10% of its proceeds from its South Highland Avenue location to the Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse, which for over four decades has provided trauma-informed therapy and caregiver support. Community members supported the fundraiser by visiting the coffee shop.  WBBJ-TV

  • Coffee lovers in Jackson will see a new Scooter’s Coffee location on North Highland Avenue next week — the shop will unveil its menu Friday and officially open on November 6. This expansion brings another option for local coffee enthusiasts.  WNBJ 39

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Liberty Tech teacher Major Christopher Honeycutt earned the Outstanding Instructor Award as a sub regional winner for region 3 for his work with the AFJROTC program — his over 24 years of military experience and leadership were recognized by his superiors.  WYN 106.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tennessee lawmakers are pushing for Alyssa’s Law to require every school to install silent panic alarms that alert law enforcement during emergencies. Senator Jack Johnson and Representative Ron Gant say the measure would cost about $8,000 per school (a move to boost classroom safety).  WNBJ 39
  • As the government shutdown continues, SNAP benefits will stop on November 1, leaving over 690,000 Tennesseans without food aid and prompting families to turn to local food banks for help. The Salvation Army of Dyer County said it feeds 275—300 people daily and is urging donations to keep shelves stocked.  WYN 106.9
  • Today, Jackson launched a free legacy planning program from the Greater Jackson Financial Empowerment Center — a service that offers one-on-one financial counseling to help residents protect assets by creating wills, updating beneficiary designations, and planning for future needs. The program is supported by the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund and is available at no cost.  WYN 106.9
  • The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said Tennessee anglers could use their licenses to fish in parts of Kentucky Lake, Dale Hollow Lake, and Big South Fork of the Cumberland River after new reciprocal agreements took effect on Oct. 16. The move restored access lost earlier this year (after expired deals) and continued long-standing cooperation with Kentucky.  WYN 106.9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents can sign up as organ donors at Jackson driver services centers when renewing or getting a new license or ID—officials note the simple process does not require extra items and 90% of donor registrations come through these centers to help save lives amid thousands waiting for transplants.  WYN 106.9
  • Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital will begin providing neonatal intensive care at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in December. The hospital’s 42-bed NICU (Level III) will be staffed by Le Bonheur specialists (including neonatologists and nurse practitioners) to care for newborns.  WBBJ TV
