COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Habitat for Humanity in Jackson is collecting shelf-stable food donations at its ReStore at 1668 North Parkway and gives a 10% off coupon (for use in the store) to donors who bring five or more items. Donations are accepted Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. as long as food is needed. WBBJ TV
- ➤ Ronald McDonald House Jackson is asking for community support during its Heart of the House Match Week—every donation made will be matched dollar-for-dollar to aid families with children receiving care at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital until November 7. The facility will open its new location at the Hyatt Hotel in December to house up to 20 families, and donors will receive a Heart of the House hat with a bonus T-shirt for gifts of $500 or more. - ➤ Residents and local leaders met Tuesday evening to discuss concerns over a new homeless shelter under construction at 424 Lexington Avenue—County Commissioner Shelia Godwin expressed worries about its impact on local families and the environment. - ➤ Lifeline Blood Services presented Jackson State Community College with the Battle of the Colleges trophy during a friendly blood drive competition that featured JSCC, Lane, TCAT Jackson, UofM Lambuth, and Union University. - ➤ United Way of West Tennessee and the Community Foundation have teamed up to help local families affected by partial SNAP benefits this month. - ➤ The Jackson Arts Council released a full calendar of November arts and culture events that include gallery exhibitions—like the Sandra Bowden Collection at Union University—and live performances across local venues. - ➤ Union University is celebrating its 27th annual Scholarship Banquet in downtown Jackson at the Carl Perkins Civic Center today. The event features headliner Steven Curtis Chapman and brings together businesses and individuals to raise funds for the university’s scholarship fund. WYN 106.9
- ➤ The UT AgResearch Center in Jackson is helping Tennessee farmers by testing soil for nematodes—tiny worms that may silently damage crop yields if not detected in time. WNBJ 39
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The government shutdown has reached 35 days—SNAP benefits will be funded at half rate and delayed for about 16,300 Madison County residents. Tennille Short from the UT Extension Office advised shoppers to buy canned or frozen produce and make a list, and lawmakers hope the shutdown ends this week. WBBJ-TV
