COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Nu Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. hosted an extraordinary celebration in Jackson that honored sisterhood and community with a keynote address by Soror Tezra Woody and inspirational music by the Nu Sigma Choir. The event also featured a catered meal by St. Luke Culinary Ministry + special recognition of the Founders’ Day Committee that helped ensure the success of the gathering.  WBBJ-TV
  • A detailed list of upcoming holiday events in West Tennessee — including Christmas parades, light displays, Santa photo sessions, holiday markets, live trees, and nativity scenes — features events from November 14 to December 14. Local Jackson highlights include a Christmas parade on December 1 at 6:30 p.m. and Home2 Suites Santa Photos on November 16.  WBBJ TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Chuck E. Cheese in Jackson will permanently close on November 23—families must visit the location in person to reserve birthday party spots before it shuts down. Wendy’s CEO Ken Cook said that between 200 and 300 restaurants nationwide are expected to close later this year.  WNBJ 39
  • Jackson Dragway, LLC announced Monday that it will close Jackson Dragway and River Road Raceway following a fatal one-vehicle crash — owner Don Baskin said he made the decision after much prayer and discussion to focus on his family, especially as he prepares to welcome his 15th grandbaby. The closure marks the end of a long-running operation he valued as a racing family tradition.  WBBJ-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy reported that gasoline prices in Tennessee fell by 1.9 cents to an average of $2.57 today — about 11.5 cents lower than last month. Some local gas stations listed prices ranging from $2.21 to $9.66 per gallon — showing a gap of $7.45 between the lowest and highest rates.  WYN 106.9
  • Many Jackson residents are preparing for Black Friday amid rising prices and uncertain spending power—local shoppers plan to seek discounts while store owners adjust offers to support customers. Some will take advantage of deals like the 10% Marshall's discount as stores such as Hattie's roll out new promotions.  WNBJ 39

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson’s street department is collecting leaves from neighborhood sidewalks today and is asking residents not to mix sticks with their leaf piles or place them on storm drains — the service is set to help clear the streets.  WNBJ 39
  • The Gibson County Commission met Monday morning at the Ed Jones Agri-plex in Trenton to discuss a grant that will fund a state-certified mental health court and a fund transfer for rebuilding a Rutherford Fire Station destroyed by a December 2023 tornado—this mental health court will be the only one between Memphis and Nashville except for Jackson City Court.  WBBJ TV
  • Jackson Fire Department warns residents to check that their space heaters have a valid certification stamp and tip-over feature and to keep a three-foot clearance from flammable items (fire officials stress the risk of carbon monoxide buildup and advise against warming vehicles in garages). They offer free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to help keep homes safe.  WNBJ 39
  • Today is Veterans Day, a federal and state holiday in Tennessee that honors all military veterans and leads to the closure of banks, schools, and post offices. The holiday, formerly known as Armistice Day (its name changed in 1954), marks both the end of World War I and a celebration of veteran service.  The Jackson Sun

SPORTS NEWS

  • The TSSAA football playoffs are underway as more than 15 local teams vie for a state title. Voters will choose the top player from the Jackson area until November 14—nominees include DK Woods, Luke Di Pietro, and others—with season stats that set them apart.  The Jackson Sun
  • The Tennessee Sports Writers Association and USA TODAY Network released statewide high school football rankings for the TSSAA playoffs—two new teams joined both Class 5A and Class 6A this round. The rankings list scores and records for teams in Divisions I and II—helping fans see key changes as the season moves forward.  The Jackson Sun
