COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity Jackson will host its annual Dream Builders New Year’s Eve Party and Lip Sync Battle on December 31 at 9 p.m. at 250 West Main Street—this Hollywood Glamour event will include lip sync battles, DJ music, a champagne toast, a balloon drop, and fireworks to welcome the new year.  WNBJ 39
  • Jackson State Community College Athletics will host its second annual Holiday Toy Drive on December 13 from 9 a.m. to noon in the JSCC Gymnasium parking lot at 2046 North Parkway — student-athletes in festive holiday costumes will distribute toys to families as they drive through and donors of new, unopened toys will receive free JSCC basketball game admission.  WYN 106.9
  • The Jackson-Madison County Library will host game nights on December 4 and December 18 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at its main location on East Lafayette Street — the free events are open to teens and adults who can enjoy a mix of classic and modern tabletop games.  WNBJ 39
  • The Community Foundation of West Tennessee announced extra food relief grants that raised total funding to $45,000 to help ease SNAP uncertainty. The funds will be given to local organizations in 20 counties, including (Carroll, Crockett, Henderson, and Madison).  WNBJ 39

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Veterans in West Tennessee will receive more services when Vets 4 Vets LLC opens a new office in Jackson. The company will launch its office at 250 North Parkway Monday, December 1 (promising hope and healing for disabled and all veterans).  WNBJ 39
  • Jackson stores are preparing for Black Friday with deals running all week—Kohl’s will open from 5 a.m. until midnight and offer prize cards for the first 200 customers, store manager Matt Kent said.  WBBJ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TDCI and the SFMO warned residents to be careful in the kitchen as families prepare for Thanksgiving feasts tomorrow — new figures show 2024 cooking fires caused 5 deaths, 8 fire service injuries, and 26 other injuries with $19.2M in damage. They advised using working smoke alarms, never leaving stoves unattended, and handling turkey fryers with care — steps to protect homes and local volunteer firefighters.  WYN 106.9
  • The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security held a Thanksgiving travel briefing today to share tips and plan increased trooper placement every 20 miles on interstates for the busy travel days, including today and the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Officials urged drivers to buckle up+ slow down and avoid distractions while the Department of Transportation will halt roadwork to ease traffic.  WYN 106.9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jackson Fire Department advises residents to keep turkey fryers at least ten feet from homes and to use baking soda for grease fires while preparing Thanksgiving feasts; it also urges checking smoke alarms and fire extinguishers to prevent kitchen fires—steps designed to keep families safe during the holiday.  WYN 106.9
  • Today at 6:00 p.m., AAA launches its free Tow to Go service to help impaired drivers and their vehicles reach a safe location within a 10-mile radius during Thanksgiving travel. The program is open to both members and non-members until Dec 1 at 6:00 a.m. in Tennessee and select states to help reduce alcohol-related incidents.  WYN 106.9
  • Madison County health officials warned that holiday gatherings and travel often lead to a rise in Covid and flu cases, so residents are urged to follow good hygiene and update their vaccinations (if not yet done) and (if eligible). They also advised keeping raw and cooked turkey separate, cooking meat to 165°F, and refrigerating leftovers promptly to prevent food poisoning.  WNBJ 39
