COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Eric Beasley Foundation delivered free blankets to seniors at Bolivar Health and Rehabilitation today to spread holiday warmth and teach the spirit of giving. The nonprofit will return on January 24 to read books to residents, providing another opportunity for community bonding.  WNBJ 39
  • AAA is offering free ride and tow service from Christmas Eve through January 2 at 6 a.m. in Jackson to help impaired drivers reach safe locations (within 10 miles); the service is available for both members and non-members and riders should call 855-2-TOW-2-GO if needed.  WNBJ 39
  • Jackson Christian High School hosted a charity basketball tournament this past weekend that raised over $70,000 for the Ryder Lewis Memorial Fund, which supports the Ronald McDonald House; the foundation plans to host similar events in the future to honor Ryder's legacy.  WYN 106.9
  • On Monday, Refresh Ministries and Cadence Bank gave Humboldt Senior Citizens Center residents throw blankets, cozy socks, and other gifts to spread holiday cheer, and the ministry is planning a ribbon cutting for its new property in Jackson soon.  WBBJ-TV

  • Christmas shopping continues in Jackson as Academy Sports + Outdoors offers last-minute deals on bikes and basketball goals. The store opens at 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. on most days and on Christmas Eve runs special hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., closing on Christmas Day.  WYN 106.9

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Average gasoline prices in Tennessee dropped 11.2 cents per gallon to $2.42 today, according to a GasBuddy survey of 3,821 stations. Prices stand 19.5 cents lower than last month and 26.4 cents lower than a year ago.  WBBJ-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Dec. 22, Madison County crews battled seven brush fires in 24 hours. Officials reminded residents that burn permits from the Tennessee Division of Forestry are required and urged everyone to burn responsibly - fully extinguishing fires to prevent further risk.  WNBJ 39

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tennessee law allows drivers 18 and older to use headphones while driving but bans earbuds for 16- and 17-year-olds (law enacted in 2019), and different states have varying restrictions for those traveling.  The Jackson Sun
  • Jackson Police and Fire announced that consumer fireworks are available for sale from Dec. 18 through Jan. 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m, while the approved fireworks use period runs from Dec. 28 through Jan. 2 with Dec. 31 extended until 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1 + residents are urged to follow safety guidelines.  WBBJ-TV
  • TDOT has halted highway construction on interstates and state routes today at 11:59 p.m. so holiday travelers face no delays until 11:59 p.m. Jan. 2, and workers will remain only in safety-required zones & drivers are reminded to follow posted speed limits.  WBBJ-TV
