COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Goodwill Middle Tennessee is seeing up to a 40% rise in year-end donations at over 50 Donation Express Centers as locals clear out closets and garages for holiday gifts (stores are busy today and staff are ready to assist), which supports training and job programs in the community.  WBBJ-TV
  • Habitat for Humanity and Hub City Brewing are hosting the Dream Builders New Year’s Eve Party and Lip Sync Battle in Jackson today. The event will feature a DJ, lip-sync battles, a champagne toast at midnight, and fireworks with a theme (Red Carpet).  WNBJ 39
  • Tonight, downtown Jackson will ring in the New Year at Bicentennial Park (345 West Main) with live music, food and an expanded safe zone leading up to a midnight fireworks show. Mayor Scott Conger will lead the countdown and Hub City Brewing will host a lip-sync battle at 9 p.m.  WBBJ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • New Year’s customs from around the world show that traditions such as breaking dishes for luck and eating grapes for prosperity guide celebrations. Locals may consider trying these practices to welcome 2026 with optimism here in Jackson.  The Jackson Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Marlon King, superintendent of Jackson-Madison County Schools, is halfway through his six-year term and was named Newsmaker of the Year. He began his leadership on July 1, 2020.  The Jackson Post

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Natchez Trace State Park is asking visitors to drop off Christmas trees at the equestrian center until January 10 to create fish habitats in lakes. Jackson residents can drop off unadorned trees for the Chipping of the Greens program at local parks through January 8.  WNBJ 39

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State law allows stores to sell alcohol on New Year's Eve until 11 p.m. and on New Year's Day from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., but local store hours may vary and liquor stores remain closed on Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter.  The Jackson Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials say flu cases are spiking across West Tennessee and advise residents to get a flu shot. Ginger Rowsey of Madison County Health warned that symptoms may be serious for vulnerable groups (young children, older adults, and those with chronic conditions) and urged seeking care if symptoms worsen.  WBBJ-TV
  • The free event 'Make TN Healthy Again' featuring Dr. Ken Berry will be held Tuesday, Jan. 20 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jackson 1st Assembly of God (1027 W. Forest St), where he will share practical steps to improve health and manage chronic conditions.  WBBJ-TV
