COMMUNITY NEWS

  • First United Methodist Church Downtown hosted Popsicles in the Park at Conger Park at 6 p.m. yesterday, serving hotdogs and popsicles—letting children play and neighbors connect as summer ended.  WBBJ-TV
  • Football season is here — tailgating is now happening in yards and outside stadiums as locals enjoy game day. Former NFL fullback Ovie Mughelli said he loves tailgating and values the community it creates while encouraging safety.  WYN 106.9

CRIME NEWS

  • Austin Drummond’s bond was revoked Monday, Aug. 25 in Circuit Court—he faces charges of attempted murder and drug possession arising from bodies found on Carrington Road on July 29 and will next appear in court on Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.  The Jackson Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • Shiloh National Military Park will host a guided hike called A General’s Last March on Saturday, August 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.—participants must pre-register by calling the park visitor center. The park will also hold live Civil War cannon demonstrations at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. across from the visitor center with no reservations needed.  WBBJ-TV
  • Jackson’s Havners Frame Shop will open its gallery doors on September 4 for Noah Stewart’s photo exhibition Spirits Come From Water—its theme explores healing, identity, and cultural memory inspired by Ehime Ora’s book; the exhibition will remain open through October 2.  WNBJ 39

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tennessee average gasoline prices rose by 3.4 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.74/g today according to GasBuddy—prices remain 5.3 cents lower than last month and 15.2 cents lower than last year.  WYN 106.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TDOT will halt lane closures on interstates and state routes from noon on Friday, August 29 until 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2 to help holiday travelers. Workers will remain in many construction zones—drivers are urged to follow posted speed limits.  WYN 106.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • TSWA and USA Today Network released statewide high school football rankings after Week 1 ended on Aug. 23—10 teams joined the list and scores and records were shown in each division. The rankings use a point system that gives teams points from first to tenth place to set the season’s tone.  The Jackson Sun
  • Joey Aguilar’s former junior college coach said Power 4 schools—including SEC teams—tried to get him into the transfer portal in 2023 while he played at Appalachian State, though he stayed on and later moved to UCLA before joining Tennessee for the 2025 season. His experience and the many calls he received point to the high demand for his skills in college football.  The Jackson Sun
