COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents gathered at the courthouse square in Jackson on Saturday evening for a candlelight vigil in memory of Charlie Kirk, co-founder and executive director of Turning Point USA who was fatally shot last week. The suspect is in custody — Kirk is survived by his wife and two children.  WBBJ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kathrine Handford will be the featured guest organist at the annual Carolyn Townsend McAfee Concert—set for Sept. 30 at GM Savage Memorial Chapel—presented by the Union University Department of Music in Jackson. The free event will begin at 7 p.m. and honor Carolyn Townsend McAfee, a Union alumna celebrated through a gift from her family.  WYN 106.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tennessee football will play UAB on Sept. 20 at Neyland Stadium at 12:45 p.m. ET — tickets start at $93 on Tickpick. All season tickets have been sold out for the third consecutive season, showing strong home support.  The Jackson Sun
  • Today, the Tennessee Sports Writers Association and USA TODAY Sports Network released the statewide high school football rankings entering Week 5 of the TSSAA season. Baylor, Battle Ground Academy and Nashville Christian lead their Division II classes while Ensworth entered Division II-AAA at number three after an upset win over McCallie.  The Jackson Sun
  • Tennessee lost to Georgia in overtime after Joey Aguilar threw for 374 yards and four touchdowns — the Vols could not finish the game. The team traded quarterback Nico Iamaleava to UCLA, where he will try to help the Bruins avoid a winless season.  The Jackson Sun
