COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This Saturday, AARP will host Pickleball 101 classes at the Westwood Tennis Center in Jackson from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.—the free clinic will offer on-court sessions with certified instructors to teach the basics of pickleball. Registration is free and AARP membership is not required.  WBBJ-TV
  • Dalton Crozier was named Jackson Firefighter of the Year by the Jackson Exchange Club. The club honors one first responder from the city or county each year (alternating between the two) for his service.  The Jackson Post
  • Local leaders celebrated the Safe Hope Center’s 10-year anniversary on Wednesday morning at its facility (512 Roland Avenue), noting the center handled over 9,500 cases since it opened in October 2015. Jackson Police Chief Thom Corley and agency heads praised the center for offering crisis intervention and legal help to victims of domestic and sexual violence.  WBBJ-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Racer Ed Robbins died Saturday at Jackson Dragway when his car went off the track — his family remembered him as full of life and devoted to his faith, and a Celebration of Life service is set for Friday at Mission Church in Memphis.  WNBJ 39

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lane College unveiled a new commissioned artwork titled The Legacy of Leadership by nationally acclaimed artist Danny Broadway during its 2025 Homecoming President’s Luncheon on the Lawn — the piece celebrates 143 years of presidents by capturing their vision and strength, and it will remain on permanent display to honor the college’s heritage.  WBBJ TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is expected to drop below $3 soon as falling crude oil prices, lower demand, and a switch to cheaper winter-blend gasoline take effect; notes from AAA and GasBuddy indicate this is the first dip below $3 since May 2021. Tennessee drivers paid an average of $2.66 per gallon on Oct. 22, with prices ranging from $2.39 to $3.05 (AAA report) (GasBuddy data).  The Jackson Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jackson State Community College will revive its homecoming tradition from Nov. 3-8 with a 'Return to the Nest' theme to honor its history and welcome alumni, staff, and students. The celebration will start with a pep rally at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 3 and conclude with a tip-off tailgate plus basketball games on Nov. 8 — a reunion social in the renovated administrative building and an exclusive shirt sale to support the college’s pantry — marking the return of a cherished event.  WBBJ-TV

  • Union University women's basketball coach Mark Campbell said next season is his last after 27 years with the Bulldogs—associate head coach Sean Blackburn will take over as head coach. He will stay on as athletics director and the team will open at home against University of Tennessee Southern on Oct. 25.  The Jackson Sun
