COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of West Tennessee + Community Foundation of West Tennessee have joined efforts to coordinate food drives, mobilize volunteers, and monitor local pantry needs as the federal shutdown delays SNAP benefits for over 690,000 Tennesseans starting November 1. The foundation is also matching donations up to $40,000 to help food banks provide essential emergency assistance.  WBBJ-TV
  • Food pantries in Jackson are struggling to meet rising demand after expected SNAP cuts forced Voices of Savannah to deplete its emergency supplies—Director Deborah Shaw said the pantry served 698 individuals and received over 25 calls about food insecurity while planning new strategies to secure donations.  WYN 106.9

  • Averitt honored Michael Wilson—an associate from Huntingdon—for 40 years of safe service at its Jackson-area facility on Express Drive. The company said his milestone shows its commitment to ongoing safety training and improvement.  WYN 106.9

ECONOMY NEWS

  • SNAP benefits for able-bodied adults without dependents will run out in November if the shutdown continues, and Tennessee officials have said state funds will not cover these benefits—leaving residents with some of the highest grocery prices in the nation. Residents can save money by using discounts at international markets and reverse meal planning.  The Jackson Sun

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Madison Academic Magnet High School celebrated being ranked the top public school in West Tennessee with a grand bash thrown by Superintendent Dr. Marlon King—featuring a costume contest, food trucks, face painting and live DJ music. The school, founded in 2003 on the University of Memphis Lambuth campus, is also ranked seventh overall in Tennessee—and the district will continue to innovate for student success.  WBBJ TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On October 28, the City of Jackson launched a free legacy planning program at the Greater Jackson Financial Empowerment Center to help residents secure their financial future—while it prepares to host weekly volunteer cleanups and other activities during No Trash November.  The Jackson Sun
  • Due to the government shutdown halting SNAP, many Tennessee families face food problems as national chains offer children free or reduced-price meals on set days + deals include offers at Chili's, Denny's and Fogo de Chao. These meals come through rewards programs + they give families a way to get food while federal support is paused.  The Jackson Sun

HEALTH NEWS

  • Restaurant inspection scores from October 24 to October 30 showed that many Jackson-area eateries earned high marks—with scores ranging from 94 to 100 across establishments in Madison, Carroll, and nearby counties. These results offer a clear look at the quality of food safety in West Tennessee.  WYN 106.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Haylen Ayers, a five-star basketball guard from USJ who led her team to a state championship appearance, announced her top five college choices—Vanderbilt, Duke, Texas, Kentucky, and UConn—via social media on Oct. 31. The 17-year-old, who holds over 30 offers and recently signed a NIL deal with New Balance, will choose her college later this season.  The Jackson Sun
  • The TSSAA released the football playoff brackets and first-round games will begin Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.—the state championships will follow in December at Finley Stadium. This marks the start of Tennessee high school football postseason play after a completed regular season.  The Jackson Sun
  • TCA beat Tipton Rosemark Academy—Zach Jones led the team to a win in a Friday night football game that ended recently.  WYN 106.9
  • USJ won the Region Championship over Jackson Christian School 13 minutes ago—Zach Jones reported—and the win boosts the team's momentum for upcoming games.  WYN 106.9
  • On October 30, Peabody and Milan played a football game where the Bulldogs won the regional crown with strong teamwork that led to their decisive victory.  The Jackson Sun
